Some lawyers prefer to make a name for themselves in one area. Others embrace three or four specialties. Still others cast an even wider net and operate a general law practice.

While the latter are sometimes called a “jack of all trades, master of none,” the term does not apply to Chattanooga attorney William Horton, even though he’s practiced general law since 1971. Instead of providing merely competent work in a variety of legal situations, he’s made a name for himself by delivering consistently skillful work, no matter what was involved.

Judge Robert McGinley Hooke was racing to save his family. The Union Army had attacked Chattanooga on Aug. 21, 1863; his sons were fighting for the Confederate Army; and as a prominent member of the Southern establishment, he was a wanted man, so he was moving quickly to escape.

I honestly couldn’t tell you what has been going on in the Levison Towers lately. Nothing seems unusual in the hustle and bustle outside my cubicle door. The law clerks have almost all returned to their respective law schools, ready to start studying anew with little hope of employment after graduation.

For some reason, I do not have a large number of pictures from law school.  I don’t know why other than I did not have a cell phone and I do not remember even having a camera back then. I am sure that I did have a camera, I just do not remember having one.  The one picture I do have of law school, was the one taken when I walked across the stage at Barton Colliseum and shook Dean Howard Eisenberg’s hand as he handed me my diploma.

Seventy-four members of the Chattanooga Boys’ Choir were enrolled for their annual summer camp, held for the first time at Dogwood Lodge, on Opossum Creek near Soddy Daisy. Stephen Ortlip is director of the choir.

Mark Twain is one individual whose writings and quotes I have always enjoyed, beginning at an early age. After all these years that his pen been has been silent, I still run across quotes that are so relevant to today’s events and happenings. He once wrote, “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble.  It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”

That may sound like a strange question, but after you already have a whole hoard move in on you, what’s a few more? I recently was filming a movie outside Nashville when I noticed that I had an extreme need to reach down a scratch my leg again and again. I wasn’t even filming outside where you might expect them to pay a call. I just had picked the critter up along the way.

With the change, the game of golf could be played as was intended, in stinging rain and 40-mile per hour winds, blowing unimpeded from the North Sea.

“Dear Judge Vic, Knowing what a stickler you are for proper word usage and grammar, I had to write …,” the note began. “Oh no,” I thought, remembering the ribbing I received recently about the Lie-Lay-Lain Rule. But this writer had a different angle. “…I had to write about ‘Kathy’s Song,’ the Simon & Garfunkel hit.” I remembered the tune.

Summer time is the perfect time to enjoy the fresh local produce that our area offers in abundance. It’s easy to pass roadside stands with the pickings of farms large and small laid out to tempt the passerby. One of the largest permanent and well-stocked roadside fresh produce stands is Linda’s Farm Fresh Produce located on Hwy. 58.

Crunch! That’s the sound the bumper on my lovely Nissan Altima made when a nasty, big SUV kissed it last week. I was about to get on the interstate and had to stop suddenly due to a brief traffic jam. Realizing that I had to hit my brakes pretty quickly, I looked in my rear view mirror and saw the front end of a GMC. He’s going hit – Crunch! – me.

The other day my daughter called around the time most mothers and wives are preparing the evening meal. I asked her what she was having and she said Crab Cakes, which was somewhat funny because I told her we were having Salmon Patties. Seems we were both on the same wavelength that day.

I was on the edge of my seat for nearly all of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” not because the movie was suspenseful or intense, but because it teeters precariously on the verge of camp for two solid hours. I kept waiting for the storyline to take an absurd turn, or for a laughable special effect, or for something unintentionally funny, but none of those things happened.
