Attorney takes practical path through life, success

Virginia Love, an avid cyclist, will face not one, but three mountains on May 6 as she tackles the 100-mile arm of the 3 Mountain 3 State Challenge. The grueling trek will take her through Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, and over Suck Creek, Sand and Lookout Mountains, and involve a climb of over 6,000 feet.

Medical Society working to improve community health

In 2008, Wanda Sweatt, a school cafeteria worker, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer. She was working, paying her bills, and getting by, but she didn’t have health insurance. Today, she’s cancer free. She credits Project Access, one of the key services of the Chattanooga Medical Society, with saving her life.

What was happening in Chattanooga in 1961

Saturday, May 6

The Chattanooga Civi-tan Club is entertaining the Appalachian District of Civitan International three day convention. George F. Hull of Chattanooga, administrative office for the TVA, was installed as governor of the Appalachian District.

When your client says ‘Sic Em!’

In the original animated movie, “101 Dalmatians,” Pongo the Dalmatian watches pairs of dogs and their owners walk past his window. Each pair looks oddly similar: an afghan hound and its shaggy-haired owner; a pug and a round, short woman on the other end of the leash; a poodle and its similarly coiffed owner; and so on.

Time to get into sales

As the storms rolled through Tennessee on the morning of April 27, I was one of those who watched as trees and other items around my farm became like seeds in a dandelion caught in a wind move across the landscape. Luckily my damage was minor, but others around the Volunteer state didn’t fair as well.

Southern Style
Finding “the way home”

I was recently honored to host a special evening in my hometown featuring showings of the new film “The Way Home.” I had originally attended a star-studded premiere of the Lionsgate and Red 5 Entertainment film at Atlanta’s Fox Theater.

Case Digests: Tennesse Court of Appeals Syllabus

Elmwood Apartments v. Jessica Woodson, et al.

Maury County – This appeal arises out of a detainer action originally filed in general sessions court in which landlord of apartment was awarded possession of leased premises. Tenants filed a petition for writs of certiorari and supersedeas for de novo review to the circuit court, accompanied by an affidavit of indigency; the writs were issued.

Are we there yet?
Wet and wild

As weathermen go, in general, no one compares in dapperness to KARK’s Mike Francis. I wonder who his tailor is? Custom fitted suits and shirts with all the trimmings. Then you change channels and come to a sharp contrast in style with KTHV’s laid-back, flannel wearing, weather garden camper, Ed Buckner.

I Swear...
Collection of puns entertains

A few weeks back I advocated the use of puns.

Within days, maybe hours, of that column’s appearance, I received an email from David R. Yale, the “Pundit of Double Entendres,” as he is referred to on the title page of his book.

River City Roundabout
Hot Mama Meets Cool Ice

Something old, something new: both very tasty for this week’s review. I decided to try the highly recommended and tucked away cantina style restaurant of Taco Mamacita this week. Taco Mamacita opened a couple of years ago on the Northshore and has expanded to include a Nashville location. I also wanted something new, which came in the form of the new icy treat chain location, Rita’s.

A Day in the Life

Spring weather is kooky and unpredictable. I can say this because of the recent tornadic activity we’ve had in Arkansas and the crazy spectrum of weather I experienced in Colorado. My flight to Denver took off during one of the many thunderstorms Little Rock has been hosting lately. The sky was really dark and I saw random strikes of lighting as we walked in the airport.

The Bookworm
“The Bond: Our Kinship with Animals, Our Call to Defend Them”

Those big brown eyes can’t fool you.

You know exactly what your pet is thinking. The wag of the tail, the flick of an ear, a well-placed paw or nose tells you everything you need to know.

You’ve been an animal lover since you can remember, a trait you share with humans reaching back millennia. But the way we treat animals now is not the way it’s always been. In the new book “The Bond” by Wayne Pacelle, you’ll find out why.

Brainbuster — Make your brain tingle!

More and more people are writing their memoirs these days. There are certain “rules to writing” that you are to know if you plan on doing the same. Take this quiz and see how effectively you can write.

1. Good writers know that all writing can be improved upon after the first draft. What is the most important aspect of revision? Re-examining your ideas; Reviewing capitalization; Looking for subject-verb agreement; Checking grammar usage.

Trek to celebrate Bike Month with women’s clinic, free bike demos

With more and more Chattanoogans embracing a physically active, eco-friendly lifestyle, businesses like Trek Bicycle Store are taking advantage of new opportunities to reach out to consumers and become a part of an exciting movement. For example, this month, Trek will celebrate National Bike Month with free product demos, a weekend mountain biking clinic for women, and by spreading the word about Bike to Work Week.

Rock City Deer Park features White Fallow deer, future home of fawns

Only one in 10,000 births of Fallow deer will result in the rare and beautiful snow-white coat of the White Fallow dear. By working in conjunction with Amicalola Deer Park, Rock City has been able to acquire two of these animals to add to their growing herd at the new natural habitat that Rock City has established.

Heyer’s real estate jumpstart earns her 24 year career

Lisa Heyer’s 24 years in real estate began straight out of college in 1986. Heyer says she decided to get licensed just in case she ever wanted to be an agent and afterwards thought, “Why not give it a shot?” And that is when it all really began, she says.

Elder Cove subdivision generates big buzz

While the Ooltewah housing area is generating quite a bit of buzz, on the other side of town, there’s a particular new development that is making some noise of its own. The Elder Cove subdivision in Lookout Valley is only five to seven minutes from downtown, offering convenience, a little distance from downtown congestion and wide-open views.

Real Estate Facts
Get their attention

There are many reasons to feel pressured to sell, be it a job transfer, family medical issues, or financial hardship. This is when you face cold hard facts about your home’s value and what you can expect to net from your sale. Understand that what you paid for your home years ago has no relevance today, and a buyer won’t pay a premium price simply because that’s what you owe.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Chocolate Cake in a Cup

As I was musing over what to write about today, it occurred to me that I haven’t done a food quiz in a while, so what better time than now? Hope you enjoy it!

1. Which bird is force-fed four times its size and eaten au naturel by the French? Ortolan; dove; magpie; minuet

The Critic's Corner
"Fast Five"

When “The Fast and the Furious” was approaching release on video in 2002, a steady stream of customers tried to get the video store at which I was working to fudge on the launch date.

Having not seen the movie, I didn’t understand the fuss, but I soon found out: cars, attitude, and scantily clad women.

Professional Resources Defined

We all have limits to our professional resources because professional resources are finite, not infinite. Our professional resources are as follows:

Time

We exchange time for income. If your skills and expertise are at a high level, you can exchange them for a large sum per hour. This personal exchange of resources will be the most profitable segment of your business model. When your time gets diverted from production to management, your resources move into a lower revenue generation category.
