Bar Association director dances the night away
Lynda Hood says she has watched ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” from the very beginning, and has mused over the thought of what fun it would be to be on stage as one of the dancers.
This daydream will soon be a reality for the executive director of the Chattanooga Bar Association. On June 26, she and five other local celebrity dancers will partner with professional dancers from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio to dance the night away in the Dancing with the Stars Chattanooga event. On hand will also be Maksim “Maks” Chmerkovskiy from the TV show who will show the novices of dance just how ballroom dancing is done.
Red Cross director relishes opportunity to serve
Barbara Alexander, executive director of the Chattanooga Red Cross, is in a position to help a lot of people should disaster strike locally.
Whether it’s a house fire that puts a family of limited means on the street or severe weather that places an entire community at risk, she’s part of an organization that tends to the immediate needs of the victims of tragedies.

Bad news or good news?
U.S. news has been grim over the last few months. First, a tragedy occurred in West Virginia, where a mine explosion killed 29 workers. Then, in other unsettling news, a respected justice told us he was stepping down from the High Court. Just when we had come to grips with that, an oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, causing an oil spill which continues to advance. Then, after thinking it couldn’t get worse, NBC announced it was pulling “Law and Order.”

It’s a short commute but an important job
With June being National Dairy Month, and a major celebration within the Volunteer State for a lot of years, this year will be no different. The dairy industry has generated billions of dollars for our state’s economic activity for years and continues to do so, even though the number of dairy farms you see along the roadsides has dwindled over the years. Last year, more than $190 million was put back into Tennessee’s economy by Tennessee’s dairy production.

Keep on rolling
The sold out first home bout of the year for the Chattanooga Roller Girls brought out the seasoned fans of the sport as well as those first-timers to witness the speed and strength of the Roller Girls. Entire families, from children to grandparents, were on hand to cheer the team on as they went head to head against the Columbia Quad Squad clad in red jerseys and, barely there, bikini bottoms.

Although they started out by offering gift baskets, Beattie says they were not satisfied with the generic wholesale items they were buying and decided to make the chocolate themselves. With the shop doing more business than ever, he says they are glad they made the switch to making customized, fresh items with premium ingredients.

There are two apparently attractive options for buyers scoping out a deal. One type is the “short sale,” where sellers have made an agreement with their lender to sell the home for less than they still owe on the mortgage. I can only imagine the difficulty of what the writers at DreamWorks Animation faced as they sat down to crank out “Shrek Forever After,” the final installment of the popular series. The original “Shrek” was a classic, full of humor, wit, great characters and a story that poked fun at every Disney cliché. The second film was most of that, only less so, while the third was mind-numbingly dull. Of the three, the first “Shrek” was the only one to tell a story worth revisiting.
