Legal system telling alcohol offenders to SCRAM
Lindsay Lohan wore one. So did Paris Hilton. Even Robert Downey Jr. slipped one on for a while. It’s called SCRAM, and while a few celebrities have been seen wearing one, it’s not the latest in Hollywood bling. Short for Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor, SCRAM is an ankle bracelet that continuously monitors offenders for alcohol consumption.

YMCA volleyball provides accessible sport for non-pros
The semi-pro and college sports teams based in Chattanooga are, by their nature, exclusive. The only way a regular Joe can take part is as a spectator. However, that’s not true of all local athletic competitions. The Hamilton YMCA adult volleyball league is, by its nature, inclusive. There are no crowds of spectators at its games because everyone, 18 and above, can jump in and play.

Real Estate Facts
Don’t try this at home
When you hear that someone managed to sell a home without representation, it’s likely that the sale was to a family member, close friend or a tenant who was already renting and living there. These exceptional cases are not the norm, and there are powerful reasons why it is so difficult to make a sale “by owner.”

Ties, thais and deposition karma
In a recent deposition, I was thinking about ties. Actually, I was concentrating on a purple tie. I purchased it a couple of months ago at Jim Thompson’s “factory” in Bangkok. I’m not sure why I ended up buying $75 ties in Thailand. They were more expensive than any I would ever buy in the United States.

Walking on water depends on you and the boat
My job requires me to spend a lot of time on our Tennessee roads and when that time involves interstate driving, you find yourself quite often looking at the double doors of the rear end of an eighteen-wheeler. Over the years I have found a lot of verbiage on these rolling billboards that are both entertaining and educational, plus some that make me want to pass just to get the verbiage out of my sight. You know the ones like, “I may be slow, but I’m ahead of you,” and “Your mama is so fat that blank blank blank blank and unmentionable.” Those I don’t appreciate and freedom of speech may be pushed to the limit.

Are We There Yet?
Life’s ups and downs
I remember a brief moment in the small kitchen of the house on Vandeventer Avenue in Fayetteville that I shared with three friends during those last days of college life. There was an old calendar pinned up on the wall, probably there to cover some hole. For some reason I flipped over the December page and found the next one there that read – January 1980. I remember how strange that number looked to me – like some futuristic foreboding of adulthood. I knew the time had almost come for us to move out of that house and begin our working careers, which the previous five or six years had surely prepared us for – not.

I Swear...
Promises, promises ...
“I promise to appear in
court ...”
Such is the language on virtually every traffic citation in the 50 states.
The balance of this important sentence invariably involves a date and a time.
Such as “I promise to appear in court on the date and at the time stated above.”

What'll they dream up next?
Smooth Away
My family might be a little strange, but we are big on celebrating all the milestones in each member’s life. For some reason, I can remember that I was allowed to start shaving ten days before my 11th birthday. It was such a monumental moment in my life because it meant that I was one step closer to becoming a lady. I would not have to be embarrassed any longer with the dark hair that covered my legs like a pubescent boy. At that same age, I was also a sixth-grade cheerleader, so having smooth, hair-free legs was incredibly essential I deemed.

Rough and tough Roller Girls lace up for first home “bout” of year
Around and around they go, and where they wipe out no one knows. The Chattanooga Roller Girls are practicing furiously in preparation for their May 15 bout at the Chattanooga Convention Center, which will feature these skating darlings in their skirts and tattoos as they battle the Columbia Quad-Squad.

Hot Rod Power Tour rolling into town June 9
Each June, the annual Hot Rod Power Tour winds its way through seven car-crazy towns throughout the U.S. This year, Chattanooga is on its list of stops. The Power Tour, which aims to bring the pages of Hot Rod Magazine to life, is considered the ultimate road trip for thousands of performance car lovers, Jessica Hubley, media contact at the publication, says.

Video production introduces clients to Realtors
The advent of e-mail was welcome news to those shy about using the telephone, and now for Realtors who want to take the edge off that awkward first meeting with a potential buyer or seller, the Chattanooga Association of Realtors is offering discounted video production services.

Ramsey’s marketing tactics focus on branding image
Geoff Ramsey is not oblivious to the economic crunch the realty business has been though and may face again after the tax credit ends on April 30. Yet, this Clinton, Tenn. native who grew up helping with his father’s political campaigns is choosing now as the time to maintain his marketing at a cost of $4,000 per month he says.

The Critic's Corner
I’m not sure if I should spell out the name of the movie I’m reviewing this week, as it might offend some readers, so I’m going to replace each “s” in the title of the film with an asterisk. That way, I won’t upset anyone with an aversion to bad language. If you keep track of what’s showing at your local cineplex, you’ve probably guessed I’m going to review “Kick-A**” (pronounced “kick asterisk asterisk”).

Kay's Cooking Corner
Memorial Day will be here before you know it, and for many people that means grilling and picnics. I love to grill out. I love being outdoors when I’m cooking and I love the smell, whether it’s my burger or my neighbors. It always reminds me of when we had camping trips as we were growing up. They are some of the best memories I have. Even when we went fishing one day in the mountains while my Mom was at work.
