25 year celebration, leading the way recognizes graduates
In a school like none other, where traditional textbooks or teachers are missing, the spirit of leadership in Chattanooga has been fostered for 25 years. The Leadership Chattanooga program through the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating 25 years of graduating classes from its program with an event by the Leadership Chattanooga Alumni Association.
New mother has found her niche in practice area, firm
For Andrew Ketcham’s first trip to a law office, he is wide-eyed and charming as all the ladies in the office rush to meet him. He is also dressed in a Onesie with a sailboat on the front. His mother, attorney Laura Ketcham, holds him in her arms like a professional, although she was only inducted into the world of motherhood six weeks ago with Andrew’s birth.

Lawyers who define the game they play
Lawyers, by nature, try to be definitional. Transactional gurus will define certain terms in their agreements. Litigators will do the same in their Interrogatories and Requests for Production directed to the other side. (Of course, succinct definitions don’t necessarily save any time or space.)

Why don’t they just leave things alone
It never fails that when I find something that works the way I want it to, fits the way it should fit my body, tastes the way I like it, smells the way it should smell and costs the amount it should cost, somebody from out of nowhere will go and change it or completely do away with it. And these days it doesn’t take long for the process to happen either.
Are We There Yet?
Holly wars
The week began in the usual way, with a drive from the west side of town. I got to work and hooked up my laptop and began going through the e-mails that had amassed since Friday. I’d actually already glanced at many of the titles, first on my Crackberry and then my IPad. It’s tough to hide these days, and the excuse, “I never got that message,” don’t fly no more.

There was some incentive to register for the Arkansas Bar Association’s annual meeting online (a small discount, as I recall), so I did so.
Enclosed with the Association’s annual meeting material was the invitation to the Arkansas Bar Foundation’s annual awards banquet (always held on Wednesday night), inclusive of the request for money to reserve a seat.

Beautiful, lovely evening
For those not well versed in Italian, Bella Sera means “beautiful, lovely evening.” While this may seem redundant, those who have attended the Bella Sera event know that the event is beautiful, lovely and a lot more.
Those who attended the wonderfully put together and pleasant evening of Bella Sera during the first weekend in June were treated to samples of wine and fine food from 11 different restaurants as well as an endlessly flowing supply of house wine. What they may not have been aware of was that their evening out was helping those who are sometimes forgotten.
What'll they dream up next?

My dad is one of those guys who appreciates anything you do or get for him during the holidays. He has a goofy sense of humor and especially enjoys giving and getting gifts of tomfoolery.
Just a few days ago, I was going through some of my things I have stored away and found a gift my dad gave me several years ago for Christmas – a spring-filled plastic snake in a can, disguised as a can of peanuts. When it is opened, the unsuspecting peanut-craver will be surprised by the exploding action of the snake from the can. Um, thanks, Dad?
India Association preserves, celebrates multi-culture with community
In the ‘70s, a group of young Indian men established an organization to keep in touch with each other. Over 25years later, the India Association of Chattanooga (IAC) is more than 300 families strong and is providing a forum for those of Indian origin, their children and every Chattanoogan to learn, preserve and share their culture.
Herbies share garden foods, tips and recipes with community
Having a green thumb is not required to be one of the Chattanooga Herbies, because with several of the members as certified master gardeners there is more than enough plant know-how to go around. They put their knowledge to good use, too, by sharing their growing love with the community in everything they put in the ground.
Former teacher reflects on impact of education
Unlike some jobs, teachers cannot hand in a finished product, but instead rely on the peace of mind in knowing they have done the best they can to give all students in their care knowledge for self-improvement.
Glen Chambers says this was his motto during his over 30 years of teaching in Chattanooga. The lives he has touched in the process and his many successful students can verify that Chambers has given his best wherever he was and in whatever he was doing.
Bad calls on the field make for good calls in life
It’s the day after umpire Jim Joyce cost Detroit Tiger pitcher Armando Galarraga the 21st perfect game in the history of Major League Baseball, and Scott McMahen, co-host of SportTalk on 102.3 FM in Chattanooga, is itching to get on the air. Like his partners, Dr. Basketball and Cowboy Joe, McMahen is eager to voice his opinion about what the botched call could mean for the future of America’s favorite pastime. With one hour to kill before the show begins, he starts to warm up, like a pitcher in a bullpen.

What to know about escrow
When you buy a home, or just make an offer, you will encounter the term “escrow account.” Like making a friendly bet and asking a third party to hold the wager money, the “escrow agent” is the neutral party that holds funds in the interest of the mortgage lender and the borrower.

Don and I are still on our health kick. I know it doesn’t sound like much to most of you, but for us, it is a big deal! We are quite proud of ourselves.
I have really ramped up my walking. I have been walking about 4 miles a day. I usually skip one day somewhere in the week, but I have been walking six days a week. Don is working on his exercise as much as his recuperation will allow.
The Critic's Corner
Before seeing “The Karate Kid,” I was going to write off this summer movie season as dead in the water.
Of the films I’d seen, “Iron Man 2” wasn’t as good as the original, “Robin Hood” was forgettable, “Shrek Forever After” proved it’s best to leave a good thing alone and “Prince of Persia” was only mildly entertaining. Of the movies I’d missed, many had received a sound thrashing from other critics, including “Marmaduke” and “Sex and the City 2.” And with the exception of “Iron Man 2,” all had underperformed at the box office, with some bombing in spectacular fashion.
