Chattanooga Film Festival returns April 2-5
It’s amazing how the Chattanooga Film Festival was hatched fully formed. Christopher Dortch and company didn’t need two or three years of awkward B-flick programming to work out the kinks and gain traction. Right from the start, the festival offered bold and surprising selections: the French tone poem “Mood Indigo,” screened months before its global release, “Cheap Thrills,” with actor Pat Healy in attendance, and the action extravaganza “The Raid 2,” also secured before its international debut, were just a few of the cinematic gems that graced the screens of The Majestic over four glorious days.
Are We There Yet?
Shun not the struggle – face it, ‘tis God’s gift. What’s happening in your life? It’s OK if you don’t answer; I probably wouldn’t hear you anyway. But while you’re thinking about yours, let me tell you a few things going on in mine.
Kay's Cooking Corner
Chicken and Wild Rice Soup
Not long ago I felt a close friend of mine needed some cheer, so I took her a bouquet of flowers as a little pick-me-up. She and her family have been going through some difficult medical issues lately and it just seemed to me she could use a bit of cheering.
REALTOR ASSOCIATION president’s message
Safety is a priority for consumers, too
Spring is upon us, which for Realtors is the start of a busy season. In juggling listing appointments, showings, phone calls, texts, emails, and paperwork, we tend to overlook taking certain precautions. In addition to reminding my fellow Realtors to look out for their personal safety and well-being amidst the busy season, I urge buyers and sellers also to consider their own expectations when it comes to real estate transactions.
The Critic's Corner
Good ‘Insurgent’ ending too little, too late
About 30 minutes into “Insurgent,” a young woman in the movie says, in exasperation, “Will someone please tell me what’s going on?” I was right there with her. I had no clue what was going on. People were running around, hiding, and chasing each other, but I didn’t know why. It would have helped if I’d watched “Divergent” before seeing the sequel.
I Swear
Because I say so
“Ipsy dipsy!” shouts Ann Marie, Marlo Thomas’s character in “That Girl.” Trying to impress a judge in court, she mispronounces ipse dixit. Meaning “he, himself, said it,” this Latin phrase connotes a dogmatic, unsupported assertion.
Do It Yourself
Faux wood garage
This past week I was chitchatting with my husband about friends of ours who had recently purchased a house that is going to require repairs to make it their home. One project they have already tackled was the garage door. When I heard about the process they used I went into creative overload. Yes, Google became my friend.
Law Day to feature Egil ‘Bud’ Krogh
Perhaps more than any other document in human history, the Magna Carta has come to embody a simple but enduring truth: No one, no matter how powerful, is above the law. Egil “Bud” Krogh knows this well. In 1971, Krogh, a 31-year-old White House deputy counsel, was tasked with finding and stopping security leaks, and became head of the Special Investigations Unit known as the White House Plumbers.
The Chattanooga of tomorrow could look like this
The Chattanooga of yesteryear: A small industrial enclave blanketed with thick smog. Its people breathe air the federal government in 1969 calls the dirtiest in America. De-industrialization in the 1980s, however, triggers a socioeconomic crisis. Massive layoffs, a deteriorating infrastructure, and social tension lead to a more than 10 percent decline in population.
The Wolford Firm opens new office on McCallie Avenue
Robert Jeffrey Wolford says a few words after a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of his firm’s new office at 1700 McCallie Avenue. (He tells people he’s next to Wally’s so they know where to find him.) In addition to his legal practice, which involves a strong focus on debt collection, Wolford serves part-time in the Army National Guard. Working with Wolford is Megan England (not pictured), a criminal defense attorney. Wolford says he has room for one more lawyer in his newly renovated space. Contact the Wolford Firm at (423) 622-6461.
