Putting down roots

As Emma Flynn and her fiancé at the time, Chuck Flynn, set foot on the south end of Walnut Street Bridge during a spring break road trip in 2011, they talked excitedly about the future. Their plans weren’t small: they’d just paid a deposit on a lease in The Hamptons, and had set a course to become Big Apple attorneys.

The unauthorized practice of law in Chattanooga
Problems ... and solutions

The purpose of this monthly column is to discuss problems common to Chattanooga attorneys. To the extent a personal opinion occasionally slips out, such opinions do not reflect the opinions of the Board of Governors of the Chattanooga Bar Association or of the Hamilton County Herald.

Which home improvements are worth it?
Realtor Association President's Message

Deciding to take on a home improvement project can be overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to choose a project that will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Reaching out to a Realtor might be just the place to start. Realtors know what features will be most attractive to potential buyers.

Look through this ‘LENS’ when making Social Security decisions
Financial Focus

Your Social Security benefits can be an important part of your retirement income strategy. But when should you start taking these payments?

You can begin accepting Social Security as early as 62, but your monthly checks will be much smaller than if you wait until your “full retirement age,” which will likely be between 66 or 67. And these monthly payments will get even bigger if you wait until age 70, at which point they “max out.” So, should you take your Social Security as early as possible and hope that the smaller monthly payments will be justified by the extra years of receiving them, or should you wait until you are older and hope that the bigger checks will be worth the delay?

The Escape Experience!
River City Roundabout

The small room had grown even smaller over the course of the last 45 minutes, with the walls seeming to close in as time ran

out. But we were close. Just one puzzle stood between us

and freedom.

Et tu, ISIS?
Under Analysis

Because I have an ambitious trial docket this year, I thought I’d begin the rigorous schedule with a little laid back Italian perspective, so my wife and I recently headed to Italy. You can’t get more romantic than Venice or more historic than Rome. First stop in Rome was the Coliseum. One of the seminal symbols of past European cultural dominance, most people don’t realize that the Coliseum was simply one big sports arena, an ancient version of Lambeau Field. Today, owners have their exclusive stadium boxes where they entertain special guests. It was the same in Roman days, but it was designated the Emperor’s Box, and he generally hung around with a slew of Vestal Virgins. Roman senators were on the next level, located where we find today’s luxury boxes. The more status you had, the better your seat. Sound familiar?

Saving Benedict
I Swear

We use the term ‘people of color’ in America. Is that immensely different to what he said? I don’t think so ….” David Oyelowo, British actor currently playing Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., in “Selma.” He was in the BBC series “MI5” and in “The Butler” (2013), “Lincoln” (2012), and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011). I’d say he’s doing pretty well for himself.

‘Jupiter Ascending’ is as bad as you’ve heard
The Critic's Corner

Worst. Movie. Ever.

Hyperbole? Sure. But those were my thoughts in the moments after seeing “Jupiter Ascending.” I couldn’t believe what I’d just seen, or how bad it was.

Where do I begin? Perhaps with disbelief that someone gave the Wachowskis, who wrote and directed this opus disastrous, one hundred and seventy five million dollars to make it. I would’ve staged a real train wreck for half the money.

Tutti-Frutti Toast
Kay's Cooking Corner

With my mom living just a few houses down from me now, it’s easy (and fun) for us to share food. One day, she made banana nut bread and brought some down to hubby and I. It was gone PDQ!

Then I reciprocated by making some baked ziti to share with her for her dinner one evening.

Are We There Yet?

More randomness.

Imposter. In last week’s “The Week,” there was a story about Jimmy the groundhog in Prairie, Wisc., biting the ear of the town’s mayor during a Groundhog Day ceremony. Then Jimmy, unlike Phil in Punxsutawney, Penn., predicted an early spring. But Phil never bit the mayor.

Pick your arguments
View from the Cheap Seats

Every trial lawyer has a story about a mom, dad, or other close relative commenting on what a great lawyer they will make based on their love of argument. There’s no doubting that there are people that love to argue. We all know people that would rather argue than breathe. It may actually be that they breathe by arguing. Either way, all they do is argue.

Good advice from mother
Read All About It

During a recent visit to the local grocery store, I heard a young mother give her toddler advice I’d not heard since my children were small. It was the same advice mothers have been using since Eve had to deal with Cain and Abel, and it’s just as important today as it has been through the ages.

Natural room scents
Do It Yourself

For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with ensuring my home smells nice. I do not aim for an overbearing smell, more like that of a clean, fresh home. The problem is, mine is literally an unhealthy obsession.
