What was happening in Chattanooga in 1960
Sunday, February 5
Dr. Maxwell A. Smith, chairman of the department of modern languages at the University of Chattanooga has been notified that he is to receive “Chevalier de la Legion d’Honeur” one of the highest honors the French government can bestow. Jacques Grellet, consul general of France at New Orleans, will confer of Dr. Smith the insignia of the Legion of Honor.
Chattanooga Bar convenes for 113th annual meeting
For an organization to thrive for more than a century, it must be able to pass the reins from one generation to the next, making sure the integrity of its bylaws and traditions, as well as its spirit and sense of purpose, remain intact.
The Chattanooga Bar Assoc-iation has done this for 113 years. As its members convened on January 26 for their annual meeting, they looked back to honor those who were worthy of recognition and looked forward to the coming year.
Sheriff tempers justice with mercy as top law official
Jim Hammond doesn’t bear much resemblance to the iconic image of the sheriff propagated in movies and literature. He doesn’t wear a cowboy hat, a leather vest, or boots caked with dust. He never hangs killers at sunrise, shoots bad guys at high noon, or patrols for cattle thieves. No one has written a song confessing to shooting him, either.

My wife can spot a good lawyer
My wife thinks I’m a terrific lawyer. Yeah, yeah I know you’re thinking. She just says that to humor me, but I can assure you that Cheryl would not tell me I was good at anything unless she believed it. I know this as a fact because she has no hesitation informing me of the litany of things I do poorly, like, for instance, cleaning the house, being tactful, or being quiet in the morning.

Practical or non-practical can all depend on where the dog is lying
In just a few days, it will be that time of the year when women think of romantic things, men panic and florists hope for early retirement. Yes, I am referring to February 14 and Valentine’s Day, and if you are a man and think it is too early even to be thinking about that sort of thing, then think again.

A sweeping success
Performing on the road has its great moments and even a few that are less great. Needless to say there are often things to laugh at along the way.
One of my devoted readers said that I have been too serious of late and needed to spread some cheer so here is one of my favorite experiences along the way. Maybe it will bring you a smile.
Case Digests: Tennesse Court of Appeals Syllabus
In Re Conservatorship of Karubah Carnahan.
Hamilton County – In this conservatorship case, a daughter filed a petition asking the court to appoint her as the conservator of her father, who had experienced cognitive decline after a stroke and required full-time care in an inpatient facility. The father’s spouse protested the appointment of the daughter as the conservator and requested that a neutral third party be appointed instead. After a hearing, the trial court determined that the daughter was the appropriate person to serve as conservator. The spouse appeals. We affirm.

Everybody just slow down
The big news so far this legislative session has been legal problems for two of the freshman lawmakers, Fred Smith of Crawfordsville and Bruce Holland of Greenwood.
Smith’s problems are a bit more serious. He was convicted of theft of property delivered by mistake, a felony. Apparently the Dermott Special School District sent duplicate checks of $29,250 to Smith’s nonprofit group, Save Our Kids. Both checks were cashed and Smith has resigned.

Good English, plus “Who am I?”
True story. It happened in front of me.
The defendant, Ms. Mar-tinez, who had recently moved to the United States from Argentina, was charged with failure to yield in connection with a motor vehicle accident.
The chief witness for the prosecution was wearing blue jeans and a plaid shirt. He had been asked to remove his John Deere cap before entering the courtroom.

Making Chattanooga a sweeter place to be
I can’t say I’ve ever met a donut I didn’t like. Donuts are the perfect combination between cake (that sometimes is too heavy on icing) and pie (that has too much sweet filling). Another perk of donuts is the customization they lend themselves to. Creativity can completely revolutionize the average glazed donut into a “gourmet donut.” Some of the finest of these gourmet donuts are found at Julie Darling Donuts, located midway along Frazier Avenue.
A Day in the Life
Technology came to the Brockman residence recently and we haven’t been the same since. Let me explain: The apartments we live at told us we had to change our Internet and cable providers to AT&T. It wasn’t a suggestion either – it was mandatory and enforced. At the time, we were using Comcast, and for the record, were very happy with the service. Nonetheless, since our main source of entertainment is from the TV and Internet, we joined the herd and called AT&T.
Brainbuster — Make your brain tingle!
1. In 1919, baseball Hall of Famer Tris Speaker offered the following appraisal of a strategic change regarding a famous player: “Taking the best left-handed pitcher in baseball and converting him into a right fielder is one of the dumbest things I ever heard.” After a while, Speaker was proven wrong, but about whom was he speaking? Cal Ripkin; Mickey Mantle; Babe Ruth; Darryl Strawberry.

“Necessary Endings”
In the last three years, you’ve lost plenty.
You’ve lost business, first of all, and maybe your job. You lost clients, investments, money and opportunity. You might’ve lost your house and your confidence, too.
It’s enough to make you lose your mind.
Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library getting facelift
It happens with age: wrinkles appear, parts fall into disrepair, and an overall sluggishness sets in. But with work, everything that’s old can be made new again.
The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library had reached the point where it needed a nip and a tuck. Under the guidance of interim director Eva Johnston, its staff has been working to make a number of changes and additions, both cosmetic and service-oriented.
Living wholesomely and frugally simplified with Wholesome Mommy
Denise Sawyer is not only a mother, teacher at Battlefield Primary and a college supervisor for student teachers in Hamilton County through Barry College, but she also writes and maintains a blog called The Wholesome Mommy.
Sawyer started blogging before her son was born, because she knew she wanted to be home with him and heard that blogging might be a way to make extra income. She found a group of bloggers that were extreme couponers and realized she could apply their methods to her own grocery bill for savings. This is how her first blog, “The Sensible Sawyer,” came to share this knowledge. Yet the work behind this blog was enormous and after almost two years with it, Sawyer decided she couldn’t raise her son and continue the blog.
Williams challenges herself to hone technical edge
Lea Ann Williams will be the first to admit she’s got a lot of work to do this year. Especially since real estate is being operated more and more from a “virtual office,” many, including Williams, will have to beef up their geek skills in order to provide the technology edge clients are seeking. To aid this process, Re/Max, including the Shallowford Road location where Williams is an agent, is hosting a technological conference in March to put their agents in the know and get them up to speed on the latest trends.
Medal of Honor Museum preserves memory and legacy
At the National Medal of Honor Museum inside Northgate Mall, there are two main missions: to preserve the memory and honor of those men who have received the highest honor this nation can award, and to educate both current and future generations on our militarily history and those who have given the ultimate for their country, says Jim Wade, the executive director of the museum.

How to buy like a seller
If you’re in the market to buy a home, take a counter-intuitive tip and imagine the day you’ll be selling it. That’s right – whether you’re a first time buyer, or relocating, this home probably won’t be your last, so look for features that will pay off when the day comes to move again.

"The King's Speech"
Before writing my review of “The King’s Speech,” I scanned the Oscar nominations for 2010. As I scrolled through the nominees, I was pleased to see “The King’s Speech” listed time and time again: best picture, best director, best actor, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best art direction, best cinematography, best costume design, best film editing, best music, best sound mixing, best original screenplay and best impersonation of Winston Churchill in a historical drama.
