Baker Donelson senior associate Sveadas enjoys a healthy work, life balance
It’s hard to imagine Justin Sveadas being anything but a lawyer. He’s tall, fit and his looks were evidently cut from good cloth. His polished surroundings at Baker Donelson fit him as comfortably as his well-tailored suit. And the confidence with which he carries himself must be a source of comfort and relief to his business bankruptcy clients.

Traditional holiday foods can contribute to depression
Stuffing, buttery mashed po-
tatoes, pigs-in-a-blanket, egg nog, pecan pie, cakes and cookies, milk chocolates, mixed drinks, gravies, creams and sauces are standard fare for most social gatherings during the holiday season. They might be loaded with sugar, salt, fat and calories, but the new year, and a new fangled diet, are just around the corner, people reason, so why not indulge? Because a hidden item on the menu can cast a dark cloud over the merriest time of the year: depression.

What was happening in Chattanooga in 1960
Saturday, December 24
LeBron Keith who has been a member of Hotel Patten’s service staff for 34 years has been selected as 1960 “Bellman of the Year” of the entire United States. The Chattanooga native was elected for the honor from more than 100 nominees by Sigma Iota Fraternity of Washington University Society of Innkeepers headquartered in Pullman, Wash.

Brock-Cooper Inns of Court raises $6,200 for the area food bank
On December 15, 2010, attorney Russell W. Gray presented Gary Paul, Development Director of the Chattanooga Area Food Bank, with donations totaling $6,200 from members of the Chattanooga Chapter of the American Inns of Court.
“With this donation, we can deliver two truckloads of food which is enough to feed several hundred families,” said Paul. “We and those we serve appreciate the generosity of the members of our local legal community.”

Digging into my law practice – a holiday wish
The holiday season is winding towards its climax, and nowhere is it more apparent than here in the Levison Towers. Vacations have started, both officially and unofficially. The unofficial ones are the best, really. Trips for out of town meetings that conveniently lapse over into an extended stay at a destination desired by the traveler. When a certain associate called to say she was snowed in in Miami, it didn’t go unnoticed. I gave her a tip of the cap for her planning – that kind of weather mishap usually comes to much more experienced lawyers.

A Christmas memory from the Firestone store
It was a cold and rainy Saturday morning recently when I proceeded to turn my front yard and home into a display of holiday gaudiness. The weather for the past several days had been above average in temperature, but on the one day I had to create my masterpiece of holiday cheer, the winds were out of the north and rain was falling like something from an old navy movie during a gale.

Love of the season
“I’d rather be an old-time Christian than anything I know.
there’s nothing like an old-time Christian with a Christian love to show.”
Those are the words that Albert E. Brumley chose to lead the chorus of this classic gospel song. To me the most important words there are “With a Christian love to show.”

Case Digests: Tennesse Court of Appeals Syllabus
Jennie F. Ingraham vs. Patrick Garrett Ingraham.
Hamilton County – After eighteen years of marriage, Jennie F. Ingraham (“Wife”) sued Patrick Garrett Ingraham (“Husband”) for divorce. After a trial, the trial court entered its Final Judgment on December 7, 2009, inter alia, granting Wife a divorce and dividing the marital property. Husband appeals to this Court raising issues regarding the valuation and distribution of the marital property. Wife raises additional issues concerning the property distribution and attorney fees.

The year winds down, as they always do. 2010 is gone forever. We can’t get it back. Some wouldn’t want to I’ll wager.
Like the Haitians who saw their capital city, Port-au-Prince, all but destroyed in January, ending the lives of 230,000 of their countrymen.

I Swear...
And a merry ho-ho to you, too! (Hic)
Someone came up to me at an event a week or two ago and said, “Merry Christmas.” Just as I was about to respond, “Happy Holidays,” he added, “The heck with ‘Happy Holidays,’ I say, ‘Merry Christmas’!”
That got me to thinking about the various holiday “greetings” that float through the atmosphere this time of year.

Jellicle Cats
Those who own cats are quite aware of their antics and the range of personalities they have. From lounging about for hours on end, to leaping on your bed in the wee hours of the morning, to finding endless amusement from a piece of tinfoil, the mind of a cat is a mystery. Yet, that doesn’t make it any less fun to hypothesize what our furry friends are thinking during their waking hours, and this is just what the smash Broadway hit “CATS” uncovers.

“What Women Want: The Global Market Turns Female Friendly”
“Go ask your father.”
Yeah, there’s a good chance you heard that a time or two during your childhood. Or this: “Just wait til your father gets home.”
And though your mother uttered those two sentences more times than you can remember, and though they both were enough to make your blood turn to ice, it was all just an act. The truth is that everyone knew who granted permission, meted out punishment and held the reigns: Mom.

Folk School offers rich tunes in a variety of different avenues
The Folk School of Chatta-nooga is the new kid on the North Shore, but already they are making an impact on the Chattanooga area in a big way.
Directors Christie Burns and Matthew Evans moved to their current location at the beginning of last year after meeting at a Tennessee Folklore Society Meeting, teaching together at the Mountain Music Store alongside John Boulware and discussing the possibility of combining their individual teaching efforts into something bigger. This led to the idea of a folk school, and thus launched the idea before they even had their own establishment.

Johnson Family Farm shows visitors views of agricultural heritage
For many years, farms that grew food, sold the products and handed down the land a family owned from generation to generation was how many in the country survived. These days, the families who make a living off farm life have dwindled so much that they have almost disappeared.

Chattanooga real estate agent works unique niche
Place Crye-Leike agent James Downey in front of a seemingly impenetrable brick wall, and he’ll find a way through it. He’ll step back, take in the big picture, and then move in close to examine every square inch until he finds a small opening no one else saw. This skill has served him well in his profession. While many agents are doing their best to survive in a challenging market, Downey has found a niche that actually grew out of the current housing situation.

Busy December signals the beginning of good times
Art Johnson, owner of Mountain City Construction, says he’s positive 2011 is going to be a good year in Chattanooga because of the new businesses coming into town that havebrought a positive attitude toward construction and remodeling with them.
“Attitudes have changed and you can see it in the press, the politics and local news that it is more positive,” he says.

Real Estate Facts
It’s a small world
If you’re anticipating selling your smaller-than-average home, do not despair, because the days of the overly sized and overly priced McMansions are shrinking in the rearview mirror! Buyers these days are looking for ways to save money on utilities and taxes, as well as save time on yard work and maintenance.

“Another year older, another year wiser.” Isn’t that how the old proverb goes? I’m not so sure of that, it seems like the older I get, the more I forget! My kids will back me up on that too!
I was reading a food article recently about eating foods that will help to prevent memory loss. I’m sure you have heard the old adage, “You are what you eat”... hum-m-m. I say this as I sit here eating Taco Bell. Back to the brain food. Several studies have shown that certain foods will boost your memory, and optimize brain health.

The Critic's Corner
“The Tourist”
Have you ever figured out the twist in a movie almost right away? Until I saw the “The Tourist,” not me. Surprise endings almost always blindside me, so when the big reveal came at the end of “The Tourist,” I was shocked that the random thought I had when Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp’s characters first met was spot on. Since I’m not getting smarter, this can mean only one thing: Hollywood has run out of ideas.

Better positioning strategy
When talking with prospects at a listing presentation, we are usually talking about our marketing and advertising pieces. We often try to draw the prospect to convert to client status through our colorful brochures, Internet sites, and overall exposure. We are, again, selling through feelings rather than tangible proof of results.
