Attorneys help with La Paz, mock trials, SCALES

Attorneys Matt Brock, David Elliott, Brittany Faith, George Hixson, Tom Horne, Drew Reynolds, Stephanie Rogers and I, together with staff from La Paz, met on July 18 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help to assist those in need and to reach out to the minority community.

We helped over 20 individuals and families obtain power of attorney and answered questions on a wide range of legal issues involving family law, landlord tenant law, immigration, contract and more.

In July, Lynda Hood arranged and attended a meeting with Dr. Bryan Johnson, Blake Freeman, Gerald Harris and me to begin involving Hamilton County Schools in the mock trial competition. We are now anticipating the involvement of at least Brainerd, Howard and Tyner high schools.

On Sept. 19 at Chattanooga State, the Tennessee Supreme Court will bring its SCALES program to Chattanooga to educate high school students about the judicial branch of government. Six hundred and fifty students will be invited to participate in the SCALES program. Presiding Judge J.B. Bennett will give opening remarks.

The benefits

The Chattanooga Bar Association affords its members an incredible array of benefits such as referrals to clients, CLEs, responses to rule proposals, fee dispute resolution, the annual memorial service, leadership opportunities, discounts at a variety of businesses and more.

Look for an announcement from Lynda about a free health care screening for CBA members before the end of this year. This benefit alone will make CBA membership worth your while!

The CBA has a website to assist attorneys who are using the Lawyer Referral Service. The service helps clients find an attorney. If you’re interested in using the LRS, contact the CBA at 423 602-9430.

If you’re an attorney struggling with alcohol or drug addiction, the CBA is here to help. We thank Art Grisham for the confidential and supportive counseling and guidance he’s given to our members who are working to overcome this issue. He will continue to chair the CBA’s Lawyers Helping Lawyers committee.
