Kay's Cooking Corner

Thanksgiving Day – it will soon be history. All the rushing and baking we do for the gathering of our family and friends will soon just be another good memory. Great food, great times together, great football game. For some of us, anyway.
However, there are some that will not have a meal, unless the more fortunate of us help. One of the most important things we can do at Thanksgiving is to help feed the homeless and/or the poor. When you go shopping, to purchase an extra can of green beans or corn or some yams for the food bank or the Union Mission will not cost that much, but it will mean the difference between eating or not for someone else. Think about it. Every little can helps.
Now down to today’s article. I know you probably get tried of Thanksgiving Trivia, and probably are wondering how much can there be? Lots, let me tell you! I have found some that is a little different and I wanted to share – so put on your thinking caps, get ready, go!

6. The Native Americans who were invited to the first Thanksgiving were of the Wampanoag Tribe. What was the name of their chief? Massasoit; Pemaquid; Samoset; Squanto.
7. True or False: Turkeys can drown if they look up during the rain.
8. The first Thanksgiving Day football game in 1934, was started by which team? Pittsburg Steelers; Kansas City Chiefs; Detroit Lions; Green Bay Packers.

There, hope you enjoyed this – I’m sure it is something you will use often! Just kidding. I can probably use this again next year and you will have forgotten all of it!
Anyway, I always fix a sweet potato casserole with a
pecan topping for Thanksgiving. I have shared the recipe many times, because it seems to be a real winner. However, here is another one that is really easy and good and I am seriously thinking about preparing it this year instead. I don’t know if I will be able to get away with it or not. But you might – and it is so easy!
Crockpot Maple Glazed Sweet Potatoes
5 Medium sweet potatoes
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
1/4 cup apple cider
Dash of salt and pepper to taste
Peel and cut sweet potatoes in half, and then into 2-inch pieces. Place in crockpot. Whisk remaining ingredients together and pour over top of sweet potatoes. Cover and cook on low for six to eight hours. Stir just enough to keep them coated. v
