Boots on: Cumberland Trail series begins Jan. 13

Outdoor Chattanooga is offering a new Cumberland Trail Hiking Series to help local residents fulfill their New Year’s resolutions to hike more in 2018.

The Cumberland Trail is a scenic footpath along the eastern edge of the Cumberland Plateau that begins on Signal Mountain.

To connect people with this trail and provide hands-on experience that improves hiking and backpacking skills, Outdoor Chattanooga will offer 12 short section hikes of four to seven miles each throughout the year, including half-day hikes and equipped overnight backpacking adventures.

On these guided hikes, groups will explore unique geological formations and walk over creeks and suspended bridges to the tops of ridges with waterfalls and scenic overlooks, all while learning how to make hiking and backpacking more comfortable and enjoyable.

Outdoor Chattanooga has selected the one-way hikes to be mostly downhill and will provide a shuttle back.

The guided hiking series begins Friday, Jan. 13 and concludes on Saturday, Dec. 1. Registration is required in advance as space is limited.

Half-day hikes are free. Equipped overnight backpacking adventures are $65 per person.

As the Cumberland Trail is a remote trail over rugged terrain, Outdoor Chattanooga asks participants to have some hiking experience and be in good physical shape.

Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating parent or responsible adult. Information: 423 643-6888.
