The selections for these lists are made by the research team at Super Lawyers. Each year, the team undertakes a multi-phase selection process that includes a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent evaluation of candidates by the attorney-led research staff, a peer review of candidates by practice area and a good-standing and disciplinary check.

Only five percent of attorneys are selected to the Super Lawyers list and two and a half percent are selected to the Rising Stars list in each state. The Rising Star category is for attorneys who are under 40 years old or who have fewer than ten years of legal experience.

First published in 1991 by Law & Politics and acquired by Thomson Reuters in February 2010, Super Lawyers magazines reach more than 21 million readers across the country.
