Mr. and Mrs. Glen M. Whiteside announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Miss Irene Louise Whiteside, to Mr. Sam E. Connelly. The marriage will take place in the early fall.
Miss Alice Huffaker entertained with a reception in honor of Miss Frank Luther of Midland, Texas Friday. She was assisted by Misses Frances Sowers, Helen Huffaker, Lena Blair, Marian Wills, Mary Dickson, Blanche and Lois Sowers, and Lalla Belle Keese. In the receiving line were Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Huffaker, the Misses Huffaker, and Miss Luther.
Miss Frances Biese has returned from Oklahoma City, where she has been teaching cello and doing concert work.
Sunday, July 30
Publication of the second volume of the Stratton genealogy by Miss Hattie Stratton is announced today.
Dr. and Mrs. T.E. Abernathy and son, Edward, will return from Asheville, N.C., this week.
Monday, July 31
Chattanooga is suffering from the odor and pollen from the Allanthus, or “heaven trees,” which are blooming in various sections of the city, causing hay fever. The police department has been asked to destroy the trees. The Allanthus tree is from the West Indies.
Whims of fashion: Hats made of organdie are popular; hats of black lace are very smart. Tulle still leads in evening fashions, and hats without apparent trimming are the smartest.
Tuesday, Aug. 1
Miss Ruth Mills of Spring City was in Chattanooga yesterday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Sallie Mills. Mrs. Mills, a member of the First Baptist Church, was the mother of Mrs. Harry Erwin and Walter Mills, and sister of Euclid Waterhouse. Burial was in Forest Hills Cemetery.
Mrs. J. Edmondson Smartt will come from Signal Mountain to be the guest of Mrs. John Chambliss on Lookout Mountain.
Wednesday, Aug. 2
Misses Elizabeth and Margaret Read have returned from Walden’s Ridge, and are the guests of Miss Ella Sims on Clarke Street.
Dr. and Mrs. J.C. Brooks have purchased a new home on Chamberlain and Orchard Knob Avenues. They will move in next week.
Thursday, Aug. 3
Mrs. Tom Hall and little Miss Emily hall will leave for a stay at Mrs. Shackleford’s on Walden’s Ridge.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Curtis will go to Calhoun, Tenn., to spend the remainder of the summer on their farm. Mrs. R.M. Cleveland and Miss Sammie Cleveland will join them.
Friday, Aug. 4
Yesterday was Election Day in Tennessee. Hamilton County Democratic nominees won over their Republican opponents. Nick Bush was nominated for sheriff; Capt. J.F. Shipp won over Mercer Reynolds for tax assessor; and Mrs. E.F. Wheland won in the race for school commissioner. Despite apparent listlessness among voters, 8,500 cast ballots in the election.
Miss Reba Palmer entertained with a picnic party for Miss Lady Louise Boswell. Guests were Misses Marian Connelly, Martha Sinclair, Muerle Wood, and Bessie Stone, and Messrs. Fred Temple, Courtney Twinam, and William Palmer. Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Wood were chaperones.
Miss Alice Huffaker left yesterday for Mineral Parks Springs to join a house party for Misses Irene and Frank Luther of Midland, Texas. v
