Two local, prominent young ladies will sing a duet at the alcazar Theater today. Miss Eloise Baylor and Miss Margaret Shalliday will sing a duet from “Madame Butterfly” at 4:30 p.m., 8:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. The picture showing at the theater is “The Selfish Woman” with Cleo Ridgely and Wallace Reid, the leading players. Admission is adults 10-cents and children five cents.
Mrs. Bruce Crabtree and Miss Virginia Isbester will go to Mentone today for a two-week stay. Miss Martha Davenport will join them later.
Mrs. John B. Steele and daughter have returned from Huntsville, Ala. Dr. and Mrs. Steele are living at the Eastern Hotel.
Sunday, July 23
Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Betts announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Katherine, to Mr. Max Seaton of Cleveland, Ohio. Miss Betts, a popular young lady, is a graduate of Randolph-Macon. She is a sister to Clifford Betts.
A group of young girls in Chattanooga have formed a “God Mothers” club. They write to the boys in service in Europe and to their buddies, sending small gifts the boys can use, trying to help them over the rough times they are experiencing.
Monday, July 24
Miss Lorraine Mischler, one of Chattanooga’s prettiest and most talented dancers, has signed with Vitagraph Co. She appeared in a movie in New York which was successfully received.
“Free Music” is greatly appreciated as was demonstrated by the crowds attending the concerts at East Lake Park and on the Courthouse lawn. Prof. J.O. Cadek is director of the Municipal Band.
Tuesday, July 25
Burch C. Patty and Marshall Lancaster will leave soon for a month’s cruise and training on a battleship on the Atlantic Ocean. There will be 1,000 Naval recruits taking this training on eight battleships.
Mrs. Dunbar Newell and children have returned from a visit in Newellton and Baton Rouge, La.
Lieut. Richard Kimball is one of the instructors at Plattsburg Training Camp, New York. Mrs. Kimball and baby daughter are with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D.P. Montague, and will join Lieut. Kimball later.
Wednesday, July 26
Miss Katherine Henderson is visiting Miss Josephine Whiteside on Lookout Mountain.
Mrs. Lapsley Hope and baby have arrived in Ymer, British Columbia, Canada. Mr. and Mrs. Hope have leased a cottage and will go to housekeeping.
Mrs. A.J. Gahagan has returned from Toronto, Canada, where she has been visiting relatives for several weeks. Her niece, Miss Lillie Tilford, accompanied her home.
Thursday, July 27
Mrs. T.H. Smith honored Miss Aline Swan with a “500” party Wednesday. Miss Swan is visiting Miss Dent Gillespie.
Edward E. Brown and Miss Dorothy Gregory were married Wednesday evening at the Central Baptist Church by Rev. E.L. Grace. The wedding will come as a surprise to their many friends. After a brief wedding trip, they will be at home on Walden’s Ridge.
Mrs. A. Pechman, who underwent an operation at the West-Ellis Hospital a few days ago, is greatly improved.
Friday, July 28
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hardie will leave Saturday for Cleveland, Ohio, where they will purchase a new car. They will motor to Chicago and to London, Ontario, to visit Mr. Hardie’s relatives.
Mrs. Eugene Bryan and son, Jack, have returned from a several weeks’ visit with Mrs. Thomas Bates in Charleston.
