Clarence Elliott, a Soddy grocer, defeated attorney James W. Van Cleave 61-52 in a startling upset victory for Democratic Chairman in Hamilton County.
Mrs. Gordon P. Street, Jr., won an unprecedented seventh Women’s State Amateur Golf Championship in Jackson, Tenn., Friday. Mrs. Street , formerly Judy Eller, who is only 25 years of age, has won the Tennessee Championship more times than any person in history.
Sunday, June 19
The Tennessee Association of Real Estate Boards at the annual convention in Gatlinburg elected Elgin Smith, president of the Chattanooga Board of Realtors, to the presidency of the State Association, and elected Raymond F. Hale, Jr., secretary of the Chattanooga Board of Realtors, to secretary of the state organization. The 1967 convention will meet in Chattanooga.
Frank Blair of New York, a prominent NBC announcer and newscaster, and Mrs. Blair were guests of the Chattanooga Yacht Club Sunday when the members of the Guntersville, Ala., Yacht Club were guests of the Chattanooga Club for the weekend.
Monday, June 20
Zan Guerry, 17, of Chattanooga, walked off with the Southern Tennis Championship in Atlanta Sunday, making him the youngest Southern Men’s Champ since Bitsy Grant won the crown many years ago.
The American National Bank and Trust Co. will open a new branch on Signal Mountain, Sam I. Yarnell, board chairman, announced. This 12th office of American National will be in the Signal Plaza Shopping Center on Taft Highway.
Edwin R. Kimsey has been elected vice president, marketing and sales, of Samuel Stamping & Enameling Company and of its wholly owned subsidiary, M.M. Hedges Manufacturing Co., Charles H. Burns, president of Samuel, announced.
Tuesday, June 21
W.N. Dietzen was formally commissioned a judge of the Hamilton County General Sessions Court Monday by Gov. Frank G. Clement. Judge Dietzen was nominated for one of three judgeships in the May 31 County Democratic primary. He was named to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge John J. Lively last week, and will fill out his unexpired term. Judge Dietzen will be sworn into office Friday morning.
Wendell D. McCurdy, Jr., has been named Controller for the Tennessee Hospital Service Association, and Sidney Scott, Jr., has been appointed director of the Medicare division of the association, John R. Hill, president of the local Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan, announced.

A former student of Southern Missionary College at Collegedale has been elected president of the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists at the church’s 50th World Conference in Detroit. He is Robert H. Pierson of Sallsbury, Southern Rhodesia, and has been serving as president of the church’s trans-African Division.
Thursday, June 23
Chattanooga has an entry in the upcoming Powder Puff Derby. Mrs. Leo W. Grant, Jr., of East Brainerd, will fly the internationally famous wll-women’s transcontinental air race solo in a 1965 Cessna 172. The 20th annual will be the longest and toughest beginning July 2 in Seattle, Wash., and ending July 5 at Clearwater, Fla., a distance of 2,765 miles. Chattanooga will be a scheduled stop.
Henry B. Montague of Washington, chief postal inspector of the United States, will be the principal speaker Friday night at the banquet session of the 35th annual convention of the Tennessee branch of the National Association of Postal Supervisors at Hotel Patten. Kelley Massey, superintendent of postal services of Chattanooga, is president of Chattanooga Branch 97 of the association.
Friday, June 24
Gov. Frank G. Clement will attend the dedication ceremonies of the new facilities at Harrison Bay State Park at 10 o’clock. The ceremonies will be held near the Boat dock. The new facilities include a new Stock Shop restaurant, a fishing pier for the handicapped, a bait shop and a new parking lot.
W.F. (Bill) Bridge has recently been promoted to Assignment Foreman by Southern Bell. Bridge started to work for Southern Bell in 1948 as a cable helper and has held numerous positions since that time.
