What was happening in Chattanooga in 1916?



Saturday, April 1, 1916

News of the death of Dr. Henry Berlin, beloved Chattanooga physician, who died Friday night, saddened all who knew him. He was active in the development of Erlanger Hospital. His son, Henry, arrived last night from New York. His daughter is in Florence, Italy and cannot come due to the war. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday by Dr. J.W. Bachman and Dr. E.A. Elmore. Burial in Forest Hills.

Miss Margaret Sadd, who is visiting in Rochester, N.Y., will arrive home Wednesday.

Miss Lula Simmons will take the place of Miss Wenonah Haymore at the Third District School. Miss Haymore has resigned.

Sunday, April 2

An interesting story is told by Charles Washington Vinson of 204 Vine St. of the country around here where he was born on Jan. 31, 1830. Dallas, 15 miles up the Tennessee River, was the first county seat of Hamilton. He told of John Ross and the Indians and the Battle of Chattanooga. He served 30 years as record clerk, deputy and chief clerk, 1853-1883, under Judge Summerfield Johnston.

Mrs. T.M. Carothers accompanied Mrs. F.B. Quackenboss and baby to Nashville where Mr. and Mrs. Quackenboss will make their home. Mrs. Carothers will go from Nashville to Evansville to visit her sister.

Miss Katherine Andrews, who has been in Washington, D.C. with Miss Margaret Key, will return to school in New York.

Monday, April 3

Central High School has announced the Senior representatives who will appear in the 1916 commencement. They are Houston Barker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Barker, valedictorian; George Richmond, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Richmond, salutatorian; Miss Louise Pope, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Pope, faculty representative; Miss Mary Igou, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Igou, class representative; Albert Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Miller, class representative. Exercises will be held May 19 at Central High auditorium.

Misses Cecelia Embrey and Marguerite Aull will go to Atlanta to attend the opera.

Announcement has been made of the merger of the Southern Express Company with Adams Express Company of New York. There will be no change in management. E.M. Williams remains as vice president.

Tuesday, April 4

Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher entertained Monday evening with an informal dinner party honoring their guest, Electra, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer D. Cogdell will move from Dallas, Ga., to Martinsville, Ga., to reside. Mrs. Cogdell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Judson Buchanan of Missionary Ridge.

Wednesday, April 5

The Girls’ Preparatory School will hold a May Day Festival. Miss Lucille Thomas will be Queen. There will be 11 graduates, Misses Ruth Dayton, Louella Smith, Sarah Stansell, Mary Louise Beckham, Dorothy Aull, Isabelia Griscom and Ida Callaway.

An enthusiastic meeting was held in the dedication of the new quarters of Lewis Mission, 123 Market St. Dr. T.S. McCallie paid a glowing tribute to the memory of Mr. Lewis, the founder. Fred Shelton was chairman for the event.

Miss Katherine Betts returned from a visit with her aunt, Mrs. Vance Wellman, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Thursday, April 6

Misses Ella Lea and Eva Roberson, who are attending school in New York, will go to Washington to spend the Easter holidays with their grandmother, Mrs. Lea.

Friday, April 7

Mrs. Walker Darrah and son of Nashville are visiting Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Bowser on Chamberlain Ave.

Mrs. L.D. Worsham complimented Miss Effie Stone yesterday with a card party. Miss Stone is a prospective bride.
