What was happening in Chattanooga in 1915



Saturday, Dec. 25, 1915

A mild epidemic of the grippe has attacked over 3,000 people in Chattanooga. Many are school children. The smoke and coal soot that has settled on the city has greatly aggravated the condition.

Mr. and Mrs. DeForrest Evans are spending a few days with Mr. and Ms. A.S. Glover on Missionary Ridge.

Sunday, Dec. 26

Miss Frankie Henderson left Saturday night for Massachusetts for a visit.

“The Story of Christmas” cantata by Matthew will be sung by the chorus choir of the First Presbyterian Church tonight. Mrs. L.G. Browne, Mrs. W.H. Pryor, Miss Almeda Schwartzman, George Freeman, and Walter Heasty will be soloists.

Monday, Dec. 27

Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Tigner of Columbus, Ga., have arrived for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Martin in St. Elmo. Mrs. Tigner is the former Miss Onie Martin.

Miss Augusta Bates of Texas is the guest of her father, Mr. Creed Bates.

Tuesday, Dec. 28

Tom Oaks, one of Sheriff Nick Bush’s deputies, has returned to the city after a visit with his father-in-law, T.B. Wooden in Shepherd, Tenn., where he spent Christmas.

Judge and Mrs. Will Cummings and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cummings entertained the younger set with a buffet supper and dance at Hotel Patten in honor of their nephew, John Cummings Grant.

Wednesday, Dec. 29

Miss Charlotte Clifford entertained with a supper dance at her home on East Terrace. The house was decorated in attractive holiday greens. Fifty guests were invited.

Mr. and Mrs. F.G. Stauffer are occupying their new home on Missionary Ridge near Braggs Tower. The son, Leslie and his wife of Cleveland, Ohio, are visiting them for the holidays.

Thursday, Dec. 30

Miss Eleanor Lasley was hostess for a buffet supper and dance at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Lasley, on East Terrace. About 75 young people enjoyed her hospitality.

Mr. Wallace of Pelican Rapids, Minn., is the guest of his son Dr. Raymond Wallace and Mrs. Wallace.

Friday, Dec. 31

Chattanoogans were clad in mackintoshes, rubbers, and umbrellas to celebrate the coming of the New Year. Fireworks and other noise makers were used by old and young alike, all enjoying the fun.

Harrison Bros. & Co., Inc. of Philadelphia, manufacturers of sulphate aluminum and allied products, plan a $100,000 factory in Chattanooga, and will start construction in May.

Howard Barr, Edwin Chapin, Robert Purse, and John C. Campbell will leave Sunday to return to the University of Virginia.
