Fire completely destroyed the Koen Manufacturing Co. and a four-unit apartment building, The Summers Apartments, in Soddy shortly before 10 o’clock Friday night. There were no deaths or injuries. George R. Koeninger, owner of the plant, which manufactured upholstered living room furniture, said the loss would run into many thousand dollars with partial insurance coverage.
Sunday, Dec. 26
J. Burton Frierson of Chattanooga, president of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute, reported that 1965 showed increased production. He also said the U.S. textile industry. along with other basic industries, participated in the general upsurge of the nation’s economy in 1965, and that they are facing 1966 with optimism.
Monday, Dec. 27
The Quarterly County Court will hold its regular meeting at 10 a.m. next Monday to elect a member of the Court to serve as County Judge pro tempore for the coming year. The present judge pro tempore is Squire E.W. Godbey of Red Bank – White Oak.
Mayor Kelley proclaimed Dec. 27 “West Point Day,” and six Chattanooga West Point cadets were honored at a breakfast at the Flaming Sword restaurant in the Downtowner Motor Inn. Attending with Mayor Kelley were cadets Vic Pangle, Jr., Jim Whitson, Al Glazner, Bill Rainer, Jim Kimball, and Claude Herman.
Tuesday, Dec. 28
Ross I. Evans and Stanley Warner will retire from the Royal division of DeSoto Chemical Coating Inc. of Chattanooga effective Jan. 1. Mr. Evans was president of Royal, Inc., prior to its acquisition by DeSoto Chemical Coatings Inc. of Des Plaines, Ill. Mr. Warner came to Royal, Inc. in November 1943 as plant superintendent. He is retiring as division plant engineer.

Mrs. E.E. Wiley, Sr., mother of Dr. E.E. Wiley, Jr., former pastor of Centenary Church, died late Tuesday night in Knoxville.
Thursday, Dec. 30
Miller Bros. Co. has started a $250,000 program to remodel completely the main floor of its downtown department store, Felix G. Miller, Jr., president, and George Blackwell Smith, Jr., executive vice president, announced.
Friday, Dec. 31
At a semi-annual awards ceremony, J.E. Whitaker, chairman of the board of the Hamilton National Bank, presented service pins to 26 officers and employees of the bank for periods of service ranging from five to 40 years.
