Saturday, Oct. 30, 1965

The Tennessee Mental Health Department is preparing for construction of the 48-bed in-patient facility for mentally ill children and the present schedule calls for awarding contract for construction next Spring. The unit is to be added to the Moccasin Bend Psychiatric Hospital here.

Sunday, Oct. 31

A 154-unit luxury Quality Courts Motel will be build on Williams Street and will represent an investment of between $1-million and $2-million. John Budiselich and Charles Lane, partners in the Drake Motel, announced Saturday.

Operation of WTVC television station and WAPO radio will be combined with offices and ultra-modern studios in the Golden Gateway. Reeve Owen, vice president and general manager here of Martin Theatres of Georgia, announced. It will be located in the existing shopping center building that houses also the Sayre Department Store and the Red Food Store.

Monday, Nov. 1

Al Porzelius, engineering consultant since retirement as manager of City Water Co., and for many years active in civic affairs, reviewed the history of the water company Sunday for members of the Chattanooga Area Historical Society meeting with Sen. And Mrs. Cartter Patten at their country home, Ashland Farms.

The federal government has approved an interest-free loan of $288,000 to pay for studies and detailed planning of sewers and treatment facilities for areas in Hamilton County outside the City of Chattanooga, and work will begin immediately on the project, County Judge Chester L. Frost announced.

Tuesday, Nov. 2

Capt. W.C. Saylors of the city traffic division issued a warning of rigid enforcement of all parking regulations with special emphasis on double parking, parking in fire lanes, parking too close to corners, parking passenger cars in truck parking areas, bus zones and loading zones. These violations carry a minimum fine of $5 each.

Wednesday, Nov. 3

Rabbi Joseph Renov has announced his resignation as spiritual leader of B’nai Zion Congregation to accept a position at Congregation Shearith Israel in Columus, Ga. He has served for over four years.

Mrs. Thomas J. Holley has been appointed Mother’s March Chairman for the 1966 March of Dimes, it was announced by Joseph S. Persinger, March of Dimes general chairman. The Mothers March will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Thursday, Nov. 4

The promotion of F. Paul Kendall of Chattanooga, to the new position of deputy managing director (marketing) for Continental Oil Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Continental Oil Co., was announced Wednesday by Andrew W. Tarkington, president of the parent firm.

The election of Ira J. Smotherman as vice-president and cashier of Hamilton National Bank was announced by J.E. Whitaker, board chairman, following a meeting of directors Wednesday.

Friday, Nov. 5

Preston P. Jordan, district manager for Southern Bell Telephone Co., said Southern Bell is helping to solve children’s telephone problems through a teletraining program which is included in the city and county school curriculum this year. Third grade students are participating in the program. Not only will the youngsters learn about the correct use of the telephone, but also about the history of communications, the life of Alexander Graham Bell, the science of sound, the parts of the telephone, how to take messages, good telephone manners, the use of the directory, and what to do in case of an emergency.

The 1965 United Fund of Greater Chattanooga campaign will officially close at noon Friday. John Guerry, general chairman, said the fourth and final report luncheon “Victory Day” will be held at the Read House and it is expected that the record goal of $1,414,722 will be reached at that time.
