Saturday, Sept. 25, 1965

The property on the east side of the 1200 block of Broad Street has been leased by Amos & Andy Buick Co., which will occupy the site after a complete modernization program is carried out, Amos Trotter, president of the auto firm, announced Friday.

The Chattanooga Symphony has reached an all-time high for new ticket holders during a season as 235 new subscribers have already purchased their season tickets for the year. Charles Gabor, the new conductor, has appeared before several civic groups generating new interest in the symphony.

Sunday, Sept. 26

Judge Russell Hinson of Chattanooga was elected vice president, East Tennessee, of the Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference during the annual meeting Saturday morning at the Read House. Judge Robert Swayne, Paris, was elected president. Judge Floyd Ambrister, Knoxville, is the new secretary-treasurer.

Monday, Sept. 27

Bottling industry representatives from all over the state attending the 43rd annual convention of the Tennessee Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages now meeting at the Read House viewed the bottle making facilities of the Chattanooga Glass Co.’s Alton Park plant, where a $4-million expansion program was initiated this month.

Tuesday, Sept. 28

Miss Frank Eldridge, who has been connected with the Hamilton County Trustee’s Office since May of 1927, will retire as chief deputy trustee Thursday. She has worked for four trustees and during the administrations of five county judges.

An estimated 102,086 persons attended the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Interstate Fair at Warner Park last week, Mrs. Olive Atwood, executive vice president and secretary, said Monday. This year was the first time everyone coming into the fairgrounds had to go through turnstiles, thus making this the most accurate attendance count in the fair’s history.

Wednesday, Sept. 29

Bryan Rose, deputy in the Hamilton County trustee’s office for the past 10 years, will be promoted to chief deputy Oct. 15. He will succeed Miss Frank Eldridge, whose resignation was announced Monday. Trustee-elect O.E. Bacon will be sworn in Friday morning to succeed Trustee Joe Richardson, who retires after 27 years in office.

Chattanooga, until Wednesday, center of the only major metropolitan area in Tennessee without a “packaged disaster hospital,” has had that deficiency remedied with the arrival of a 200-bed emergency unit and its storage in the basement of Park Place School.

Thursday, Sept. 30

The Chattanooga-Hamilton County Community Action Program for Economic Opportunity Wednesday approved a proposed half-million-dollar Headstart program as outlined by Dr. Bennie Carmichael, superintendent of city schools, it was reported by Roy Batchelor, executive director of the CAP.

Friday, Oct. 1

Former Gov. John Davis Lodge of Connecticut, prominent attorney, writer, and lecturer, will address the Metropolitan Dinner Club of Chattanooga Friday night at the Read House at the club’s first meeting of the season.

The Herald notes with sadness the untimely death of Hiram Sanborn Chamberlain, IV, 26, while traveling in Mexico. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram S. Chamberlain, III, of Lookout Mountain. He was a graduate of Baylor School and spent one year at the Univ. of the South at Sewanee, and later graduated from the National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City, Mo. He was associated with Capital airways in Wilmington, Del. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain.
