Book sale at Hamilton Place Mall

The Friends of the Chattanooga Public Library will hold its spring book sale at the Hamilton Place Mall during regular mall hours through Sunday, May 10. Hours for the sale will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The sale will take place in the old Piccadilly Restaurant location near the Sears entrance. Thousands of donated books representing many genres, including children’s books, will be available.

Chattanooga Outdoors Show

The inaugural Chattanooga Outdoors Show will take place at East Ridge’s Camp Jordan Park and Arena Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 10. The show will bring in exhibitors from all over the southeast to show off everything from kayaks and backpacks to ATVs and fishing boats.

Bike (and hike) Moccasin Bend

Outdoor Chattanooga will host a bicycle and walking tour of Moccasin Bend on Saturday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m., beginning from the future home of the Moccasin Bend visitors center on Hamm Road. The free tour will begin with a group bicycle tour to the tip of the peninsula, followed by a short walk to the Tennessee River along the Old Federal Road trail. The ride is appropriate for adults and kids ages 12 and older when accompanied by an adult. Helmets are required.

Kids in the Kitchen

In an effort to raise awareness and help to reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues, the Junior League of Chattanooga will host Kids in the Kitchen on Saturday, May 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Orchard Knob Elementary School. This year’s event will feature healthy snacks, cooking demonstrations, educational games, and physical activities.

Walk4Hearing

The Hearing Loss Association of America’s Walk4Hearing event will take place at Chattanooga State Community College on Saturday, May 9. Filmmaker Amy Oppenheimer to speak

The Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga will host a luncheon featuring filmmaker Amy Oppenheimer on Tuesday, May 19 at noon at the Jewish Cultural Center, located at 5461 North Terrace Road. Buying local on a budget

Crabtree Farms will host a class about buying local goods on a budget Friday, May 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The class will cover how to incorporate local food into your diet without breaking the bank. Call 423-493-9155, extension 10, or email achill@crabtreefarms.org to sign-up.

The Faith of Flannery O’Connor

 

The Southern Lit Alliance is teaming up with Theology on Tap to discuss the prayer journal of acclaimed Southern writer Flannery O’Connor. Three panelists (John Grammer, professor of English at the University of the South; Robert MacSwain, assistant professor of Theology and Christian Ethics at the University of the South; and author Jamie Quatro) will discuss how O’Connor’s Roman Catholic faith comforted her when people rejected her writing and how it impacted her literary style. “A Conversation on the Faith of Flannery O’Connor” will take place Tuesday, May 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Camp House, located at 149 E.
