On Monday, I received a call about our Law Day speaker. My contact at the Professional Education Group, Henry Lake, informed me that “unavoidable circumstance will prevent Bud Krogh from being in Chattanooga on May 1st. But fear not. One of our great attributes is our ability to fill in such unfortunate occurrences with equally able, crowd-pleasing speakers. In this case, I present to you former Congressman Brian Baird of Washington.”
Lake said Congressman Baird knows Bud and his work, and will be the perfect speaker for both the schools and for the Law Day luncheon. I understand Congressman Baird’s concentration (indeed much of his focus during his 12 years in Congress) is integrity. He was the author of the STOCK Act, which prevents the legislative and executive branch members and their staffs from using confidential information for their own enrichment. Also, one of Congressman Baird’s books, “Character Politics and Responsibility,” follows the same path Bud lays out in his talks.
“He’ll be a great speaker for the schools,” Lake said. “They’ll learn much from this man who has traveled the world, and who has negotiated face-to-face with the Middle Eastern leaders they hear about on the nightly news – those in Syria, Egypt, Palestine, and Israel. He’s also written books aimed specifically at family bonding, and he’s an expert at connecting with all ages.”

Brian Baird, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, former president of Antioch University’s Seattle campus, and a retired six-term member of Congress. He is an award winning instructor who was named the funniest celebrity in Washington D.C. during his service in the House for his stand-up comedy performances. In addition to his background in government and academia, Dr. Baird has worked in industry, written three books and made numerous media appearances on national and regional programs.
From the one-on-one intimacy of clinical work to speaking before crowds of thousands of people, Brian understands communication in unique and exceptionally insightful ways. As a member of congress, Baird introduced the STOCK Act which would prohibit members of Congress, their employees, and executive branch staff members from profiting from non-public information they obtain through their positions.
He is the author of numerous journal articles and three books (“Are We Having Fun Yet?: Enjoying the Outdoors With Partners, Families, and Groups,” “The Internship, Practicum, and Field Placement Handbook: A Guide for the Helping Professions,” and “Character Politics and Responsibility. Lightning Source”). Dr. Baird received his B.S. from the University of Utah, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1977.
