Mise En Scenesters to screen underseen gem

The Canadian cult oddity “Crime Wave” remains one of the most criminally underseen films of the 1980’s. An early example of postmodern filmmaking, the story details screenwriter Stephen Penny’s attempts to write a crime film in the grand cinematic tradition. He has a variety of potential beginnings and endings, but he struggles to find a middle. He discovers an opportunity for script-doctoring assistance through a mysterious man named Dr. Jolly, who inhabits a surreal version of the American south. Borrowing the visual styles of everything from educational films to Hollywood gangster dramas, “Crime Wave” presents a world full of vibrant color and boundless energy, but with a strange, putrid presence lingering just outside the frame, says Mise En Scenesters’ Chris Dortch. Tickets are $5 dollars, and all of the proceeds go to the filmmaker. Christmas tree lighting at Southern Adventist

Southern Adventist University will host its annual Christmas Tree Lighting event on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. There will be a short program including performances by Deep 6, Southern Ringtones, Expressions of Praise, Collegedale Academy Band, and the Southern Strings and Jazz Ensembles. Kirsten Wolcott Memorial 5K Run

Southern Adventist University will host its Kirsten Wolcott Memorial 5K Run on Friday, Dec. 5 at 3 p.m. The annual run commemorates the death of Kirsten Wolcott, a junior liberal arts education major who died while serving as a student missionary in Yap, Micronesia. Participants will be ranked by the top 20 males and females. The run is free for community members, and no prior registration is required.
Wind symphony Christmas concert
Saturday, Dec. 6
Southern Adventist University will host its Christmas Pops Concert on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. The concert will include performances from the Wind Symphony, the Jazz Ensemble, the Percussion Ensemble, and the Southern Ringtones. The event is free and open to the public. Music selections will include “Dashing Through the Snow” by Richard Southerncedo, “The Eighth Candle” by Steve Reisteter, “Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head” by John Jacob Niles, “Wassail Dances” by Philip Lane, “Fum, Fum, Fum” by Chip Davis, “Bellringer’s Fantasy” by Randol Alan Bass, and “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson. Conductor Ken Parsons holds bachelor’s degrees in music education and theology from Walla Walla University and a master’s degree in brass performance from the University of Oregon.

Southern Adventist University will host its School of Music Christmas Concert on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. The concert will feature the Choral Ensembles and the Symphony Orchestra, who will perform George Frederic Handel’s “Messiah.” This event is free and open to the public. Conductor Gennevieve Brown-Kibble holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Andrews University, a master’s degree in vocal performance from Indiana University, and a doctor of musical arts degree in choral conducting from the University of Arizona.
