The 15th annual session of the Hamilton County Baptist Association, in a meeting at South Seminole Baptist Church Friday representing 121 churches with a combined membership of 49,000, unanimously opposed any effort to legalize the sale of whiskey by the drink in Hamilton County.

Sunday, Oct. 18

The Chattanooga Scottish Rite Society fitted 451 children at the Shrine Temple Sunday with new shoes and socks. According to George A. Henry, shoe distribution chairman, employees of Miller Bros., Baker’s Shoe Store, and Lovemans measured the children for size, and Scottish Rite members and their wives fitted the shoes and socks.

Monday, Oct. 19

Mayor Kelley Monday presented gold keys to the city and certificates of citizenship to six Japanese women leaders visiting Chattanooga for three days as part of a five-week tour sponsored by the State Department.

The Chattanooga Area Milk Producers Association has acquired the capital stock of the New Grant-Patten Milk Co., and will arrange to pay immediately the amounts owing unsecured creditors under a plan approved by the bankruptcy court last summer, Referee Byron Pope said.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

More than 700 people heard Senator Everett Dirksen address the $10-a-plate luncheon in the Read House Tuesday on behalf of his son-in-law, Republican Howard Baker, Jr., candidate for the U.S. Senate. Senator Dirksen was introduced by Harry Carbaugh, Republican state chairman. Baker was introduced by George O. Scoggins, his local campaign manager.

Wednesday, Oct. 21

Construction is scheduled to get underway soon on St. Barnabas Apartments in the Golden Gateway after a building permit for $1,240,000 was issued by the city Tuesday. The 177-unit apartment is the second phase of a building program sponsored by the Hamilton County Episcopal Commission.

Thursday, Oct. 22

Substation engineer Carroll L. Fox of the Electric Power Board has been named assistant secretary of the finance division effective Monday. Harry T. Morgan, associate engineer, will succeed Fox, C.B. Johnson, EPB general manager, announced.

Friday, Oct. 23

Dr. W.C. Pallas Wednesday acquired title to property at Ninth and Carter Streets in the Golden Gateway on which he will build a 150-unit motel for lease to Downtowner Corp. The cost of the land was $181,000. Dr. Pallas is required to start construction Nov. 15.
