Chattanooga’s first bicycle traffic signal

The first bicycle traffic signal in Tennessee began operation last week in Chattanooga at the north end of the Walnut Street Bridge at Frazier Avenue.

The new signal utilizes bicycle-shaped red, yellow, and green indicators to alert cyclists that the traffic light is targeted at them and designed to protect their safety.

By clarifying the movements of the different modes of transportation at the intersection, the new signal supports the mission of the Transportation Department by increasing safety for all travelers.

To use the signal, cyclists should proceed to the end of the bridge and stop at the red light. The stopping point is marked on the bridge to position bikes over a sensor that will detect the cyclist and initiate a green light in the north and south directions for safe merging into traffic.
