Monday, April 10

Dr. John B. Steele, Chatta-nooga physician and civic leader for more than 50 years, was presented the Tennessee State Medical Association’s “Outstanding Physician of the Year” award Monday night at Erlanger Hospital where he is a patient following an automobile accident Sunday.

Tuesday, April 11

Chattanooga Lookouts won the opening ball game at Engel Stadium Tuesday afternoon. The smallest opening day crowd in the 32-year history of Engel stadium – 4,327, watched the Lookouts defeat Macon’s “Peaches” 12-3.

Wednesday, April 12

The Louisville & Nashville Railroad’s new Wauhatchie freight yard was placed into operation Wednesday, marking completion of one of the major steps in the costly and complicated program to eliminate downtown grade crossings.

Thursday, April 13

Superintendent Bennie Carmichael of the city schools, Wednesday, expressed vigorous opposition to including an ROTC program in the new high school to be built on the Wheland property in North Chattanooga.

Friday, April 14

A 500-voice choral program by sixth grade students, instrumental numbers by the Central High School band, and folk games will highlight the 13th annual Music Festival of Hamilton County Schools Friday night at 8 p.m. at Memorial Auditorium.
