Briefs: New MRI arrives at Children’s Hospital

Children’s Hospital at Erlanger is the home of a new pediatric MRI machine – the region’s only dedicated MRI machine for pediatric patients.

April 17, a crane lifted the specially designed machine into its new home in the Kennedy Outpatient Center.

The MRI Suite is the first phase of the new Children’s MRI and Outpatient Procedure Center.

Erlanger pediatric specialists expect the new MRI machine will be “up and running” by early June.

Collegedale police invest in lifesaving AED

The Collegedale Police Department has four new AEDs ready to be issued to officers in the field. The agency issued five last year and expects to order more next year.

First responders use an AED, or automated external defibrillator, to help people experiencing cardiac arrest. This tool evaluates a patient’s heart rhythm and delivers a shock when necessary to stimulate the heart into beating. AEDs are found in most government or large business buildings.

The CPD aims to outfit each patrol car with an AED for deployment during emergencies.

According to the American Red Cross, cardiac arrest is among the leading causes of death in the United States.

For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the odds of survival are reduced by 10%.

Access to an AED and knowing how to use one is critical during those emergencies.

Collegedale police are recertified in operating AEDs every two years.
