Is your home secure for the holidays?

With Christmas quickly approaching, many families in the Chattanooga area are already preparing for holiday travel. As you pack your suitcases and coordinate care for pets, don’t forget to survey your home security.

Robberies increase by an average of 20% each December across America, with the average value of stolen items being $2,891.

Technology today provides a variety of options from doorbell cameras to motion detectors you can monitor easily from your phone.

Plus, home security systems are more affordable than ever. You can also have the peace of mind only professional installation and monitoring can provide for pricing similar to self-installed systems.

Additionally, with wireless security system options, renters can also protect their possessions without any damage to leased property.

Besides a security system, outdoor lighting is also a necessity when it comes to securing your property. If your home doesn’t have adequate lighting, consider adding motion detecting flood lights and solar-powered pathway lights to keep entrances well-lit and to deter criminals.

Another important measure to protect your home is to always lock your car when parked in your driveway and remove any valuables. Theft of personal property from vehicles is the most common type of larceny.

If you’re planning to travel this holiday season, put your mail on hold and ask a friend to pick up any packages that might be delivered. A pile of mail or packages is an easy indicator that a home is empty and a potential target.

Asking a neighbor to keep an eye out for anything suspicious and leaving a light on inside your home would also be wise.

If you add a home security system, additional lighting or other security features, notify your insurance company. Most policies offer discounts for these safety measures – and any savings this time of year is a good thing.
