Dr. Stephen Miller is the new health officer for the Hamilton County Health Department. Miller has a background in family work and medical experience that ranges from emergency room physician to private practice.
Miller is a Chattanooga native and a graduate of the College of Osteopathic at Nova Southeastern University. He completed his family practice residency at the St. Joseph Hospital System in South Bend, Indiana, and went on to practice emergency medicine full time.
Miller returned to Chattanooga in 2014 and took on the role of medical director at Erlanger Wellness Center.
He describes himself as a family man who enjoys spending time in outdoors.
Chattanooga State appoints Jaynes dean
Chattanooga State Community College has tapped Chad Jaynes to serve the dean of its business and industry division.
Jaynes first joined Chattanooga State in 2016 as manager of solutions development in the school’s economic and workforce development division.
Chattanooga State appointed him interim dean of the business division in April 2021.
In his role with the economic and workforce development division, Jaynes advised area businesses on development and customized training solutions.
As interim dean, Jaynes worked with faculty and staff to increase enrollment for students within existing and new programs or certificates. Part of his work included leading a correctional education project for incarcerated individuals.
As dean, Jaynes will supervise and direct support services and the programs within Chattanooga State’s business and industry division. He will shape academic strategy to promote and assist in the development of new courses and programs based on local and regional needs, initiate collaborative programs and articulation agreements with baccalaureate institutions and lead divisional initiatives to expand early postsecondary opportunities for high school students.
Jaynes holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from Mississippi State University. He is a graduate of ChattLEAD, TNTrained and Leadership Hamilton County Schools. He currently serves as a board member of the Tennessee Small Business Development Center.
Coca-Cola board welcomes Alling
Coca-Cola Bottling Company United has elected Ted Alling to its board of directors.
Earlier this year, Coca-Cola board member Robert Cannon Jones IV, who has served since 2002, announced his intention to retire from service in April 2023.
Alling’s election to the board continues United’s tradition of having representation on its board from across the company’s geographic territory, with Chattanooga being the cornerstone due to its historic significance.
A resident of Chattanooga, Alling is the co-founder and former CEO of a $500 million startup, Access America, which merged with the United Parcel Service subsidiary Coyote Logistics.
That initial success allowed Alling and his fellow Access America founders to create Lamp Post Group, a venture capital firm and tech-focused incubator located in Chattanooga.
Lamp Post Group invested $36 million into the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, spawning a long list of successful startups that includes Bellhops, Ambition, Chattanooga Whiskey and Steam Logistics.
In 2016, Alling co-founded Dynamo, a venture capital fund aimed at reforming the logistics industry. Alling is the managing director of the fund.
Most recently, Alling became one of five partners in Brickyard, a venture fund and portfolio group that provides capital and focus for young companies to relocate to Chattanooga.
Alling’s passions extend beyond businesses into education. In 2018, he and his wife opened Chattanooga Preparatory School, an all-boys charter school. Chattanooga Prep now has over 300 students.
Alling’s civic involvement has included serving as president of the Chattanooga Transportation Club, trustee of the Howard Fund and a board member of Pearl Ministries and the Tennessee Aquarium.
Alling has received the Community Impact Award from the Urban League and is in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Business Hall of Fame.
