Wood floor demand high despite rising lumber costs

Flooring choices have seen a major shift due to the global pandemic. With consumers spending more time at home, both comfort and functionality are driving current flooring trends.

While carpet has been less popular than hardwood, luxury vinyl and other solid surfaces in recent years, it’s making a slow and steady comeback in homes.

Updates in stain-resistant technology as well as more modern styles and patterns have made carpet a great choice for living spaces, stair runners and more.

Carpet tiles are also increasing in popularity and are a great choice for open-concept room dividers, sunrooms and home gyms.

Even with the ongoing volatility of the lumber market, hardwood floors remain highly sought after by homeowners. Wide planks are becoming more popular as they provide a cleaner, more cohesive look with less seams. Consumers are also leaning toward matte finishes for a more natural vibe.

Quality alternatives to traditional hardwood floors have been flooding the market and increasing in popularity. Morgan Brown of Floor Coverings International of Chattanooga says many innovative and new products are coming onto the market.

“Two products that have really been sticking out to our clients are luxury vinyl plank and engineered hardwood. These products are in high demand because they’re made to last a lifetime. Some come with a warranty of more than 40 years,” Brown notes.

“The durability of these products is also keeping clients interested. Pet-friendly, kid-friendly, waterproof, scuff proof and stain proof are all examples of how hard-wearing these products are,” she continues.

“Plus, LVP and engineered hardwood come in a variety of colors, textures and characters to suit any style.”

Natural flooring, as well as nature-inspired textures and patterns, are especially increasing in popularity. The always-versatile tile continues to be a top choice for bathrooms, laundry areas and the like with a gravitation toward natural hues that provide a more serene, relaxed atmosphere.

The green flooring market is seeing growth with more options to choose from including sustainably sourced wood, engineered wood flooring and carpet made with natural or post-consumer fibers.
