The Net Resource Foundation is launching a south Chattanooga community beautification project.
In partnership with Westside Baptist Church, the open space at 4000 Hughes Ave. will offer an outdoor performance venue, tree-covered paths, a location for summer and after school programs and a community garden.
WMWA Landscape Architects contributed the design. The project will be completed in June 2021, notes a news release.
The NRF estimates the price tag of the project will be $52,000. This will include drainage, infrastructure and locally sourced and sustainable trees and vegetation.
NRF Executive Director Raquetta Dotley is applying for infrastructure grants through the city and will be seeking donations for park benches and outdoor art.
Dotley says the park will provide essential outdoor resources for the families living in Alton Park.
“This community is worth investing in. The recreational green space, performance venue, strategically placed trees and open food sources from the community garden will all enhance this community’s assets.”
Matt Whitaker of WMWA Landscape Architects says the firm is committed to addressing environmental and social justice issues through its work.
“We believe it’s our duty to combat inequities through our words and actions. We also believe our work with the Net Resource Foundation will enhance the quality of life for the church congregation, surrounding neighborhood and broader south Chattanooga community.”
The NRF is seeking donations and volunteers for the project.
Founded in 2005, the NRF seeks to “challenge systemic issues through mentorship and community-building programs in the South Chattanooga Community.”
Through a partnership with Westside Church, the NRF leads the youth in Alton Park through after school programs, beautification projects and food programs. The nonprofit primarily works with children from kindergarten through sixth grade.
