Newsmakers: City, Chamber, Urban League name Styles L. Hutchins Fellows




The City of Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce and the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga has named Daijah Mitchell and Terence Norman, Jr. the latest Styles L. Hutchins Fellows.

Mitchell is a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga junior majoring in business human resources; Norman is a UTC junior majoring in political science.

Mitchell and Norman will work with government, community and UTC leaders and stakeholders to implement recommendations and projects initiated by previous fellows.

The Styles L. Hutchins Fellowship was launched in 2019 following a recommendation from UTC’s Black Student Alliance and is named for one of the attorneys who represented lynching victim Ed Johnson before the U.S. Supreme Court.

To date, the Fellowship has included 10 students who have worked in Mayor Berke’s office in partnership with the Urban League and Chattanooga Chamber.

Ruby Falls honors two

of its employees with Steiner Scholarship

Ruby Falls recently selected of two employees to receive the annual John Thomas Steiner, Sr. Memorial Scholarship: Heather Allen and Shelby Smith.

Allen, a senior at UTC, has been employed at Ruby Falls as a tour guide since 2019. After moving to Chattanooga last year, Allen joined the Christian sorority, Sigma Phi Lambda, and recently was elected vice president. Through her duties, Allen serves the community and volunteers at the local Ronald McDonald House.

Allen is on track to graduate with a degree in graphic design.

A Ruby Falls team member since May 2019, Smith was a member of the Dade County Marching Band. During the five years she was on the color guard team, Smith expanded her education in leadership and community involvement.

Following her recent high school graduation, Smith has enrolled at Georgia Northwestern Technical College, where she plans to study to become a mechanic.

Ruby Falls established the Steiner Scholarship in 2008 to honor the memory of the former Ruby Falls president and to recognize Ruby Falls employees who have demonstrated commitment and passion for their community and careers.

THA honors Parkridge Health nursing executive

Deborah Deal, chief nursing executive for Parkridge Health System, has won the 2020 Nurse Leader of Distinction Award from the Tennessee Hospital Association.

The honor recognizes Deal’s work to optimize patient experience, improve nurse retention and enhance the quality of services provided across Parkridge Health while nurturing the careers of other nurses.

“Deborah’s work to elevate the level of nursing across Parkridge Health is a testament to her dedication to her profession,” says Tom Ozburn, president and CEO of Parkridge Health. “She tirelessly advocates for her nursing colleagues and ensures they always have the opportunity to develop their careers. She epitomizes what I look for in a nursing leader and deserves this award.”

Having earned a master’s degree in health services administration, Deal is working toward her doctor of nursing practice degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
