The Jewish Cultural Center will screen five Jewish-themed films virtually beginning Oct. 20.
Film festivals throughout the U.S., Europe and Israel have recognized each of the films, which were produced in the U.S., Norway, Israel, France and Great Britain.
“We had to suspend our in-person screenings in May due to the pandemic,” says Michael Dzik, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga. “As the longest running international film series in Chattanooga, we felt it was important to present the series in a way that would make it accessible to the greatest number of people.”
Each week during the series, one film will be screened from noon Tuesday until noon Thursday. Guest speakers will discuss certain films Thursday evening via Zoom.
There will be two ways to view the films. Subscribers will be able to watch the entire series for $50 per household. People can also choose to view individual films in the series. Both options will require registration at www.jewishchattanooga.com.

Oct. 20
Golda’s Balcony, The Film
The winner of 21 audience favorite awards, “Golda’s Balcony, The Film” is based on the 2003 play, “Golda’s Balcony,” written by William Gibson. The film captures a solo performance by Tovah Feldshuh, who plays Golda Meir and numerous other characters. The film’s producer, David Fishelson, will discuss the film Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
Oct. 27
The Crossing
“The Crossing” tells the family-friendly story of 10-year-old Gerda and her brother, Otto, whose parents fight in the Norwegian resistance movement during the Second World War. After their parents are arrested, they discover two Jewish children hidden in a secret cupboard and help them flee from the Nazis.
Nov. 3
Incitement
Winner of the best film award at the 2019 Israeli Academy Awards, “Incitement” chronicles the year leading to the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin as he sought peace with the Palestinians. Israel’s consul general to the Southeastern U.S., Anat Sultan-Dadon, will discuss the film Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
Nov. 10
An Irrepressible Woman
Leon Blum, the Jewish French socialist politician and three-time prime minister, stands at the center of “An Irrepressible Woman.” In the film, Janot Reichenbach falls in love with Blum at the age of 16. Years later, when they can finally be together, the Nazis arrive in France, and Reichenbach gives up her comfortable life to link her destiny to Blum’s.
Nov. 17
The Keeper
The winner of 10 audience awards, “The Keeper” tells the true story of Bert Trautmann, a German soldier and prisoner of war who secures the position of goalkeeper at Manchester City against a backdrop of British postwar protest and prejudice.
