WDEF-TV in Chattanooga will move frequencies July 2 at 11 a.m. Viewers who watch TV with an antenna will need to rescan their TVs at that time to continue watching the station.
Rescanning is when a TV finds all of the available channels in an area.
Viewers will not need to purchase new equipment or services. Also, those who watch WDEF-TV through a cable or satellite service will not need to rescan.
The Federal Communications Commission is requiring WDEF and nearly 1,000 other television stations nationwide to move to new frequencies to make room for wireless internet services.
“Our goal is to make this transition as easy as possible for our over-the-air viewers,” says Phillip Cox, general manager of WDEF-TV. “If they haven’t rescanned their TVs recently, they might discover WDEF channels they didn’t even know they were missing, like Bounce, Court TV Mystery and Grit.”
To rescan, select “scan” or “autotune” on the TV or converter box control menu. Instructions are usually available by pressing the “set up” or “menu” buttons on the remote control.
This move is happening behind the scenes, so the channel number will not change.
Viewers can call the Federal Communications Commission’s consumer hotline at 888 225-5322 and press “6” to speak with a help desk representative. The call center is staffed daily from 8-1 a.m.
