The members of the Justices Ray L. Brock Jr.-Robert E. Cooper American Inn of Court met virtually via WebEx for their annual business meeting and wrapped up another year with the election of new officers.
The new officers include:
• Chancellor Pamela Fleenor, president
• Katherine Lentz, president-elect
• David Higney, immediate past president, special projects chair
• Ron Powers, secretary, achieving excellence coordinator
• W. Adam Izell, treasurer
• Judge Gerald Webb, special projects chair
• W. Neil Thomas, III, founding member
• Executive committee member
• Sheri Fox and Jennifer Exum, membership and program co-chairs
Executive committee members:
• Ariel Anthony, William Hannah, Richard Rose, Lee Davis, Chris Collins, executive committee members at large
• Kara West, technical assistance/adviser
Just before passing the president’s gavel to Fleenor, Higney noted to the members that when the Inn’s leadership developed 2020’s continuing education theme in 2019, no one in the group could have predicted the coronavirus pandemic.
The Inn had decided to focus its teaching groups first on identifying the ways older members had overcome and forged through crisis to operate successful law practices, and then to combine those historical lessons with the emerging technology and analytical methods new members now offer established practitioners and judges.
Higney noted that those lessons “proved fortuitous and beneficial to the Inn’s membership.”
“All of us have gained new tools, perspectives and ideas about how to confront COVID-19 challenges in a manner that helps our clients, our law firms and the courts as we begin navigating the unique landscapes that now lies ahead of our civil and criminal justice systems,” Higney said.
Fleenor later said she’s honored to serve with attorneys who are dedicated to improving professionalism in the practice of law. “We face unique challenges in the upcoming year, but I know we’ll continue to strive for excellence in serving those in need of legal assistance in our community.”
The Inn will continue to meet 10 times per year, whether remotely or in person, to foster improved education, professionalism, ethics and civility.
