“4 Courses and,” a new dinner series founded by Carmen Davis, Kenyatta Ashford and Alex Curry, will feature guest chef and James Beard award winner Michael Twitty at its inaugural event.
The dinner, “4 Courses and 4:44,” will take place Sunday, Oct. 6, 5:30 p.m. in The Read House’s Silver Ballroom.
The series aims to join people of diverse backgrounds together for dialogue on the topics covered within a single musical project.
A portion of the proceeds from the dinner benefit The Howard School’s culinary program, whose students will serve the guests and assist the chefs in the kitchen.
The dialogue of the first “4 Courses and” event will focus on topics covered in rap artist Jay-Z’s album, “4:44.”
The musical project highlights personal and political elements for Jay-Z and the African American community. The menu and discussion for the “4 Courses and 4:44” dinner will focus on the song, “The Story of OJ.”
“The task of selecting a chef who can facilitate the dialogue around racial inequity and economic empowerment as it pertains to ‘The Story of OJ,’ as well as carefully curate an award-winning menu, was not easy, but we found that person in Michael Twitty,” says Davis, co-founder of “4 Courses and.”
While in Chattanooga for the event, Twitty also plans to do a demonstration and talk with the students at Howard who are participating in the school’s culinary arts program.
Each edition of “4 Courses and” will feature a new lineup of chefs along with a different venue and theme. The participating chefs for “4 Courses and 4:44” are Ashford, Flying Squirrel executive chef Ben Park and Twitty.
The next dinner theme, venue and date have not been announced.
