Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office details public scam

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has received a report of a scam involving criminal imposters claiming to be detectives with the office. The imposters were found to be “spoofing” (impersonating) actual numbers the HCSO uses.

These same imposters reportedly were claiming to be agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the U.S. Social Security Administration and the Internal Revenue Service.

The scammers were telling victims they were under investigation for crimes and demanding the victim wire money to a specific bank account or face arrest and prosecution.

The HCSO’s criminal investigation division confirmed the scam.

The HCSO says no law enforcement agency will ever ask anyone to wire money to a bank account. The office is also encouraging citizens to never give their personal information over the phone if they cannot confirm the caller or agency’s identity.

Victims of a scam should notify their local law enforcement agency.
