Events: Chattanooga State to present ‘Carmina Burana’




Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” will be presented in the Humanities Theatre at Chattanooga State Community College on Friday, March 1, 7:30 p.m. The performance will feature Chattanooga State’s music department, Choral Arts of Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Ballet and Heritage High School Concert Choir. Chambliss Center for Children’s Mardi Gras Gala

Chambliss Center for Children will host its seventh annual Mardi Gras Gala on Friday, March 1, 7-11 p.m., at Bessie Smith Hall. The evening will begin with jazz piano and hurricanes in Preservation Hall. Guests will then stroll down Bourbon Street to receive their beads and preview the silent auction. The event will continue in the French Quarter with Dixieland ja zz by the Ralph Miller Quartet, a late-night dance party and a parade. The evening will feature Cajun-inspired fare. Lincoln scholar presentation

Lincoln scholar Jonathan Putnam will speak on the topic “How the Youth Lincoln Became Our Lincoln” and sign copies of his new historical mystery, “Final Resting Place,” at an event sponsored by the Southern Lit Alliance in The Arts Building, 301 E 11th St., Saturday, March 2, 2 p.m. This presentation is part of the Southern Lit Alliance SouthBound Author Lecture Series. Donate clothes for homeless teens

Signal Mountain High School students Caroline Cornett, Emily Holt and Sydney Houck are partnering to hold a clothing drive to benefit homeless teens through Threads of Care, a nonprofit organization that works to provide homeless teens with basic necessities. The drive is scheduled for Monday, March 4, through Friday, March 15. The students will be accepting new or gently used jackets, shirts, shorts, pants and more at the middle and high school entrances on those dates.

Parenting in the brave new digital world

First Things First is inviting Chattanooga-area parents to learn how to manage their child’s journey through today’s technology-driven culture. The family focused nonprofit will present Parenting in the Brave New Digital World on Tuesday, March 5,

Heart for Haiti Awards

Former Haitian prime minister Dr. Jack Guy Lafontant will be the guest speaker for the annual Heart for Haiti Award presentation and benefit dinner Friday, March 15, at Stratton Hall. The Children’s Nutrition Program established the Deb Watlington Heart for Haiti Award in 2015 to recognize an individual who has “gone the extra mile” to support CNP’s efforts. This year’s honoree is the late Chattanooga filmmaker Bobby Stone. The annual benefit dinner supports programs that have reduced childhood malnutrition from 25 percent to 3 percent among Haitian children ages 5 and younger. Tickets, sponsorships

Lit Tee to raise funds for orphaned females in Cameroon

The Mary Walker Historical and Educational Foundation and LSMB Business Solutions are celebrating National Reading Month with Lit Tee, a tea party fundraiser to support foundation and literacy programs in Cameroon, Africa. The event will be held at the Chattanooga Event Center, 2193 Park Drive, Saturday, March 30, noon-2 p.m. Admission is $35. Guests are encouraged to wear a “snazzy” T-shirt of their choice.
