The Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga invites the Chattanooga community to view the “Jewish Words” exhibition at the Jewish Cultural Center, located at 5461 North Terrace Road, through Oct. 11.

The exhibit includes works by 21 artists from all over the U.S. The exhibit may be viewed Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Fridays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The exhibit may also be viewed at www.Jewishchattanooga.com.

To schedule a group tour, call 423 493-0270.

Each artist’s label contains a description of his or her piece and a short biography. Artists from Massachusetts to California and Florida to Ohio shared work ranging from traditional quilting and quilling to sculpture and photography.

Several of the exhibiting artists have shown their work at the Jewish Cultural Center before, but more than half are new to the center.

Many of the pieces focus on Judaism in a solemn way. In some of these cases, the artists have provided the Bible verse or Jewish story that inspired their artwork.

The exhibit also contains works with Yiddish proverbs. Some of these pieces poke fun at Jewish traditions.

In addition, some of the pieces provide commentary on the current social situation.

“Words make us human. Words are mighty swords. They can be dangerous and swiftly kill, or be gentle and loving,” says Ann Treadwell, exhibit curator. “Words, in the context of reflecting on community, are powerful resources in times of sorrow and fear. Words can build hope.”
