Touch-A-Truck

Children have a fascination for large motorized vehicles. At Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, September 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tennessee Riverpark in the maintenance field parking lot adjacent to C.B. Robinson Bridge, they will have the opportunity to observe up close and have hands on interaction with a variety of trucks, service rigs and other motorized vehicles. Admission is free. Crabtree Farms fall plant sale and festival

Crabtree Farms will host its eleventh annual Fall Plant Sale and Festival on Saturday, September 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Crabtree Farms will once again offer vegetable, fruit, and herb gardeners a chance to purchase local, sustainably-grown plants for their home gardens, while attending free gardening workshops and enjoying live music and food and crafts from local vendors and artisans. Civil War interpretive program for families

The Chattanooga History Center will present From the Journal of a Confederate Nurse for ages 8 and up from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, at the Center. The program will be led by CHC History Educator Caroline Sunderland. The fee is $10 for one parent and one child. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited and pre-registration is required by Thursday, September 12. Call 423-265-3247 to register. Parents, grandparents, or other relatives and their youngsters will be guided by an historic interpreter dressed as Civil War nurse Kate Cumming might have been. Using Kate’s journal, participants will learn about the importance of research based on primary sources, and the potential importance of journaling. There will be fun activities and an examination of an authentic Civil War field surgeon’s kit. In 1862, Confederate nurse Kate Cumming served the wounded in the Chattanooga area. As the Union Army moved toward Chattanooga, Kate moved south into Georgia, where she worked at several locations receiving the southern wounded. She continued to move with the front line of battle throughout the war. She recorded in her journal the work performed in the wartime hospitals, including the field tent hospitals. Much of what is known today about Civil War medicine comes to us through Kate’s journal.

La Paz Chattanooga’s 2013 Latino Leadership Awards

On Monday, September 16, La Paz Chattanooga will host the 2013 Latino Leadership Awards at the Downtown Chattanooga DoubleTree Hotel from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to recognize and honor Latino leaders from the Chattanooga area. Friends of the Library used book sale

Saturday, September 21-Monday, September 30

The next Friends of the Library book sale will take place at Eastgate Town Center Saturday, September 21 through Monday, September 30. As many as 30,000 used books will be available for purchase. The event will raise money for programs at the Chattanooga Public Library the city does not fund including literacy programs, staff appreciation and development, and projects for special populations. The upcoming sale also will feature local poets and fiction and non-fiction writers, who will sign their work at the author’s table. For more information, call Becky Wooley at 423-653-7902.

AARP Driver Safety Course

Tuesday, September 24, and Wednesday, September 25

Life Care Center of Hixson, Tenn., located at 5798 Hixson Home Place, will offer the AARP Driver Safety Course on September 24 and 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day. The eight-hour course, which is broken into two four-hour sessions, is designed for drivers age 50 and older, but any age may attend. The class is taught by a trained AARP instructor and refreshes driving skills and the rules of the road in an informal setting. Those who complete the class might be eligible for a discount on their auto insurance. Interested parties should check with their insurance agents to see if they are eligible. The class fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Registration is due by September 17.
