Saturday, September 7

Judge John T. Mahoney Friday announced he is retiring “under physical disability” from the First Division bench in Circuit Court. Judge Mahoney was appointed to the judiciary April 10, 1958 by Governor Clement.

The Hamilton County Baptist Pastors’ Conference and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary of Louisville, Ky., will sponsor a theological workshop at the First Baptist Church Monday, September 9 through Friday, September 13. Three seminary professors - Dr. Wayne Ward, associate professor of theology; Dr. Harold Songer, assistant professor of New Testament interpretation; and Dr. Findley B. Edge, professor of religious education - will guide the discussions.

Sunday, September 8

John C. Goins, prominent Chattanooga attorney, was designated Saturday by Governor Clement to serve as special temporary judge for the first division of the Circuit Court in Hamilton County to succeed Judge John T. Mahoney, who asked to be retired because of physical disability. Gov. Clement said he will withhold appointing a permanent judge until the Chattanooga Bar Association has conducted a poll and submitted three nominees.

Monday, September 9

Names of seven local attorneys will appear on the ballot names to members of the Chattanooga Bar Association in the preferential voting for Chancellor to succeed Chancellor Clifford Curry, who is retiring. Names of three lawyers polling the highest number of votes will be sent to Gov. Clement. The following names had been received: Robert L. McMurray; Ray L. Brock, Jr.; Sizer Chambliss; Edward S. Abernathy; Clarence Kolwyck; Jack Wilson; and Joe V. Williams, Jr.

Miss Anna Belle Clement, Gov. Frank Clement’s sister, spoke Monday night to an overflowing audience of more than 500 Democrats at a “unity” dinner at Patten Hotel sponsored by the Volunteer Democratic Committee. Mrs. Betty Carver was general chairman for the dinner and mistress of ceremonies.

Tuesday, September 10

Preliminary plans for two large apartment projects were disclosed Monday to the City-County regional planning commission. Weldon F. Osborne, East Ridge real estate developer, proposes to erect an apartment on Lee Highway near the Eastgate and Brainerd Village Shopping Centers. Fenns Restaurant, Inc., is contemplating a two-story garden-type apartment development on part of its riverfront property directly east of the Chattanooga Little Theatre.

Wednesday, September 11

The City Commission Tuesday gave enthusiastic endorsement to the nomination by Mayor Kelley of William Zachry for a new four-year term as city auditor. Zachry has been auditor since 1951 and had intimated he planned to resign when the new administration under Mayor Kelley took office in April. All members of the commission describe Zachry as extremely competent, trustworthy and accommodating.

Thursday, September 12

Plans for a 40,000 square foot addition to the warehouse of Dixie Saving Stores, Inc., were announced at the 33rd annual banquet of the organization Wednesday night at Fairyland Club. Dixie Saving Stores at present is comprised of 250 retail food stores, all located in the greater Chattanooga trading area, George Berke, general manager, said.

The Hamilton National Bank’s East Brainerd Branch at Eastgate Center is expected to be open in late October, W. Roy Meyers, vice chairman of the board, said Wednesday.

Friday, September 13

Plans for three more Lovell Field improvement projects, to cost an estimated $750,000, were outlined Wednesday for the Greater Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce Aeronautics Committee. The upgrades will include a runway extension, ramps and taxiways, and a link to Highway 153, which is being improved and tied in with the interstate highway system. The work is proposed for the next fiscal year.

Bob and Don Kelley announce the opening of their second new Biff-Burger Drive-In restaurant located at 4328 Brainerd Road, where infra-red broiler heat instead of conventional frying is used to prepare hamburgers, hot dogs and other foods.

Robert E. Tyson, Chattanooga, has been elected to membership in the American Angus Association at St. Joseph, Mo., announced Frank Richards, secretary. Mr. Tyson was one of 68 breeders of registered Aberdeen Angus in Tennessee elected to membership during the past month.
