Saturday, September 5, 1914

Sixty-three residents of Missionary Ridge Friday night met in response to a call of the Ridge Business League to oppose the building of a Tuberculosis Sanitarium on the Crest Road. The resolution was adopted, and $1,600 was subscribed to employ an attorney. Harry Wise, vice president of the League, presided. A committee appointed to work out plans was composed of Judson Buchanan, J.H. Davenport, and L.L. Peak.

Sunday, Sept. 6

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Llewellyn, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Spears, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brown, and Edward Whiteside formed motor parties to Rhea Springs Saturday to spend the weekend.

Misses Charlotte and Edith Isabelle Patten are the guests of Mrs. Z.C. Patten, Jr., on Lookout Mountain during the Mountain Tennis Tournament.

Monday, Sept. 7

“Labor Rules for the Day!” All business is suspended, factories are closed down, and the celebration starts at 9 a.m. with a parade ending at Warner Park, where there will be a barbecue and program. Hon. George L. Berry of Rogersville will be the speaker at 1:30 p.m.

Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Peale of Harrisonburg, W.V., announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Margaret Read Peale, to Robert T. Wright, Jr., of Chattanooga. The wedding will take place Sept. 30.

Miss Wessie Bowen will come Tuesday from Chickamauga, Ga., to visit Miss Vera Trimby on Missionary Ridge.

Tuesday, Sept. 8

Mark Morrison, Jr., former manager of the Live and Let Live Drug Store, has purchased the Palm Drug Store at the corner of Eighth and Market and will open in a new location at Eighth and Cherry Streets, the former location of the Chattanooga Savings Bank. He expects to be open for business in a week.

Miss Katherine Signiago and Miss Margaret O’Grady will return today from a two-week stay at Lake Lookout.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles S. Thompson entertained with a launch party Monday. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. Guy Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. S.O. LeSeuer, Dr. and Mrs. David Houston, Mr. and Mrs. John Jeffords, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Landis, Misses Sammie Cleveland, May Kaderly of Nashville, Mr. Jesse Gahagan, and Frederick Thompson.

Wednesday, Sept. 9

The Red Cross reported they received $2,002 on Pine Breeze Tag DayvSaturday. Mrs. H. Goodman was chairman.

Dr. C.H. Meyers is now in London and will arrive in Chattanooga the second Sunday in October. Mrs. Meyers and children will go to Ottumwa, Iowa, to visit relatives before returning home.

Miss Elizabeth Lupton of Bedford City, Va., will spend the winter with Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Lupton at Lyndhurst.

Thursday, Sept. 10

Capt. James Polk Smartt ends a long career as soldier, churchman, merchant, and historian. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Paul J. Kruesi. Capt. Smartt served in the Confederate Army and was historian for the Chattanooga-Chickamauga Military Park Commission, filling the vacancy caused by the death of Gen. H.V. Boynton. He was vice-president of Chattanooga Savings Bank and director of the Chattanooga Steamboat Co.

Mr. Julius Y. Talmadge will come Friday to join Mrs. Talmadge on Walden’s Ridge. They will return Saturday to Athens, Ga., making the trip in their car.

Mrs. J.A. Cunningham is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Walter Cummings, at Farm Fields. Mr. Cunningham will come this week from Henderson, Ky.

Friday, Sept. 11

Mrs. Lily Gray and daughter, Miss Ellen Bruce Gray, will return to their home in Danville, Ky., after spending the summer with Dr. and Mrs. John Walsh on Missionary Ridge.
