Friends of the Library used book sale

 Through Monday, September 30

The next Friends of the Library book sale will take place at Eastgate Town Center Saturday, September 21 through Monday, September 30. As many as 30,000 used books will be available for purchase. The event will raise money for programs at the Chattanooga Public Library the city does not fund including literacy programs, staff appreciation and development, and projects for special populations. The upcoming sale also will feature local poets and fiction and non-fiction writers, who will sign their work at the author’s table. For more information, call Becky Wooley at 423-653-7902.

Annual Down Syndrome Buddy Walk

Saturday, September 28

On Saturday, September 28, AT&T Field will be packed with the loved ones of those in the greater Chattanooga area with Down syndrome. At noon, walkers will hear the story of Ashley DeRamus, a Birmingham native who started her own clothing line to show the world what individuals with DS can accomplish. Two local cheerleaders with DS will then lead the hundreds of walkers on a short route near AT&T Field. Families will then return to the stadium for activities, prizes and food. Canine Disc Championship

Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29

Chattanooga is going to the dogs - disc-catching dogs, that is! The most talented canine athletes on Earth will take to the skies to compete in the 2013 HyperFlite Skyhoundz World Canine Disc Championship at Coolidge Park Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

River Rocks becomes RoverRox

Wednesday, October 2-Sunday, October 13

The Chattanooga River Rocks Festival will change format for 2013, becoming the RiverRox Adventure Sports Games. The focus of the 11 day event will be land- and water-based competitions designed to attract top athletes. Included in the events are the Swim the Suck 10 Mile, Triple Crown Bouldering Comp, the Chattanooga Head Race and the Rock Creek Stump Jump.

Volunteer for Tennessee River Rescue

Saturday, October 5

It’s not too soon to think about volunteering to help with Chattanooga’s signature outdoor stewardship event, the TN River Rescue, happening Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals, church groups, scouting troops and neighborhood associations can all register to help clean up a portion of the TN River watershed. This year’s goal is to have 25 work zones, encompassing Bradley, Hamilton and Marion counties. Free symphony orchestra concert

Sunday, October 6

Southern Adventist University’s Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Laurie Redmer Minner, will perform its first concert of the new school year on October 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Collegedale Church of Seventh-day Adventists. Highlighted pieces include Mozart’s “Overture to “The Magic Flute,” Bizet’s “L’Arlesienne Suite No. 1,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7 in A major.” The event is free and open to the public. Party like am ‘80s rock star

Chattanooga-area residents will soon have a chance to party like a rock star as they fight to stop lung disease. On Saturday, November 2, party-goers will enjoy an evening of food, auction items, and rocking 80’s-style entertainment with Rubik’s Groove. Dress is casual, but guests are encouraged to come dressed as an ‘80s rock star to ramp up the fun. The Quest for a Cure Research Dinner will benefit the American Lung Association in Tennessee’s lung disease research and educational programs. It all happens in the ballroom at the Chattanoogan Hotel, located at 1201 S. Broad Street. The festivities will kick off with cocktails at a silent auction at 6:30 p.m. A gourmet dinner will follow. Rounding out the evening will be a Rock Star acknowledgement program, a live auction, and the Rubik’s Groove Band. Awards will be presented for best costumes.
