Massages and their benefits

Massages are becoming a very important part of daily life, and nowadays clinics can be found anywhere you go. Recognized as an excellent stress-buster, most everyone wants to get in on the action.

I’ve been out of town before, and after fighting a migraine headache without my prescriptions handy, resorted to a massage. It really helped to relieve the pain.

If you’ve never had a massage and are uncertain of the types, maybe this information will help you understand the process.

There are many different types of massages; the types are generalized to their origin (eastern and western). Some common Eastern types are Shiatsu, Acupressure and Polarity. Eastern massages involve an understanding of the body’s energy.

Some Western types are Swedish, Escalen, Neuromuscular Therapy, Trager, Myofascial Release and Connective Tissue Therapy, and are based in an anatomical understanding of the body.

Here are some popular types of massage:

Swedish

The most common type of massage in the United States, also known as Swedish massage or simply massage therapy.

Aromatherapy

Massage with one or more scented essential oils. One of the most common essential oils used is lavender. Aromatherapy massage is great for stress-related conditions or depression.

Hot Stone

Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage works the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is used for tight or painful muscles, repetitive strain, postural problems, or recovery from injury.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese bodywork that uses localized finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians. Each point is held for two to eight seconds to improve the flow of energy and help the body regain balance.

Thai Massage

Like shiatsu, Thai massage aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure. You don’t just lie there; rather, the therapist moves and stretches you into a sequence of postures. It’s like yoga without doing any work. Thai massage is more energizing than other forms of massage.

Pregnancy Massage

This is becoming increasingly popular with expectant mothers. Emphasis is put on position and support of the woman’s body during the massage, and how to modify techniques. Pregnancy massage helps to reduce stress, decrease swelling, relieve aches and pains, and reduce anxiety and depression.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves applying pressure to certain points on the foot that correspond to organs and systems in the body.

Sports Massage

Specifically designed for people who are involved in physical activity, but you don’t have to be a professional athlete to have one. The focus is on preventing and treating injury and enhancing athletic performance.
