Street Smarts for Bike Share

Outdoor Chattanooga will host special sessions of its free Street Smarts Cycling Seminar for users of the Bike Chattanooga Bicycle Transit System at 6 p.m. on the above dates. Outdoor Chattanooga is located in Coolidge Park. Adults and kids ages 16 and older are invited take a short class on how to ride a bicycle in city traffic. OC is going to cover the rules of the road and then take an optional ride through the downtown area on Bike Chattanooga bicycles. Birding tour by bicycle

Outdoor Chattanooga will host a guided birding by bicycle tour on the Tennessee Riverpark 9 to 11:30 a.m. beginning at its Coolidge Park facility. Volunteer birders from the Chattanooga Audubon Society and Tennessee Ornithological Society will lead the birding. Beginners are welcome. Bring your own bicycle or borrow one from OC. First Things First 15-year anniversary

First Things First will host its 15th Anniversary Celebration at the Chattanooga Convention Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. Dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Academy Award nominee Sean Austin (“The Goonies,” “The Lord of the Rings”) will speak. Veterans Event set at Chattanooga State

The U. S. Small Business Administration and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will host an event for local veterans featuring the Mobile Vet Center. The free event will take place on the main campus of Chattanooga State in the Humanities Auditorium from 7:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Attendance is limited to the first 350 veterans who register. Free parking will be available in the Center for Engineering, Technology, Arts and Sciences parking lot. The purpose of the half-day event is to let local veterans know about the wide range of services available to them. The event includes panel discussions about opportunities in education, housing and small business.

Thursday, Sept. 27-Thursday, Oct. 18

Fireside at Greenway Farm

Outdoor Chattanooga is hosting family nights by the campfire at Greenway Farm every Thursday through October 18. Bring camp chairs and marshmallows, and enjoy family music and entertainment from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Outdoor Chattanooga has dubbed September 27 “Lodge Cast Iron Pot Luck” night. Bring a Dutch oven, skillet, cornbread baker or griddle and something to share. Before the program, bring the family to the farm for canoeing on North Chickamauga Creek. From 6 to 7 p.m., OC will have canoes, paddles and lifejackets at the farm’s south launch for people to use on the creek. All equipment and staff supervision will be provided. Life jackets are sized for adults and kids ages 5 and older. Children younger than age 5 should have their own life jackets. Crabtree Farms’ Big Pig Roast fundraiser

The sixth annual Big Pig Roast fundraiser will begin at 6 p.m. at Crabtree Farms. The family-friendly evening will feature slow-roasted pork BBQ, local veggies and vegetarian options prepared by Greenlife. Beer from Big River Grille & Brewing Works and non-alcoholic beverages are included in the cost of the ticket. The Pig Roast will rock until the sun goes down with live music from the Folk School of Chattanooga and the Hittin’ the Sauce BBQ Sauce Contest. Proceeds go to fund Crabtree Farms’ educational programs, which include Farm-To-School efforts, gardening education and community outreach. Tickets are available online at www.crabtreefarms.org.

Jordan Thomas Foundation Low Country Boil and Golf Classic

The Jordan Thomas Foundation, a local foundation that provides prosthetics for children of traumatic injury, will host its 6th Annual Low Country Boil and Golf Classic on a Sunday and Monday. The Sunday event begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature traditional low country fare, drinks, a silent auction and music by the Ben Friberg Trio and Priscilla & Little RicKee Band. Annual Autumn Children’s Festival

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Chattanooga will host its 23rd Annual Autumn Children’s Festival on Saturday, October 6 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday, October 7 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Tennessee Riverpark on Amnicola Highway. The festival features activities for children of all ages – including: a mobile rolling video game theater, giant inflatables, carnival games with fun prizes, arts and crafts, pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, Ronald McDonald Magic Show and costumed character appearances plus health, wellness and educational programs. Admission and parking are free. Proceeds from the activities benefit families with critically ill and injured children at the Ronald McDonald House.
