What was happening in Chattanooga in 1916?



Saturday, Sept. 2, 1916

Fifty-two members of the McCallie School Alumni Association were present at the annual banquet held at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club Friday night. Judge Nathan L. Bachman served as toastmaster. Officers were elected for the new year. Carl Smith was elected president. He will succeed Eugene Bryan.

Sunday, Sept. 3

Miss Louise Llewellyn has gone to Peoria, Ill., where she will be a bridesmaid in the wedding of Miss Elizabeth Coffey. Miss Coffey is well known here, where she has been a popular visitor.

Monday, Sept. 4

Inspired by the swimming feat of Miss Marguerite Baird and Arthur Journey, who swam across the Tennessee River from the Golf Club, three North Chattanooga girls – Misses Elmina Chaffee, Edith Sheehee, and Stormer – swam from the club to Walnut Street Bridge in 50 minutes.

Mr. and Mrs. W.P. McBroom have returned from White Sulphur Springs, and will take possession of their new home on Missionary Ridge.

Tuesday, Sept. 5

Frank S. Carden, city attorney, was the speaker at Labor Day festivities held in Warner Park yesterday. The crowd of 14,000 was filled with holiday spirit.

Miss Helen Johnson will go to Tate Springs to visit her sister, Mrs. Samuel Boyd Allen.

Wednesday, Sept. 6

Misses Elsie and Eunice Shepherd will leave next week to re-enter Martha Washington College.

Misses Fannie and Hannah Boyle have returned from Flint Hill, Ga., and are the guests of Mrs. J.T. Hill before opening their home in Fort Wood.

Thursday, Sept. 7

Alvin “Chigger” Browne, an old Sewanee hero, is due here tonight to take up duties at once as coach of Baylor School’s athletic teams. Alex Guerry, Baylor headmaster, expects all last year squad members to return and be marshaled into a Red and Gray best football team.

Friday, Sept. 8

Miss Gladys MacKenney and Mr. Albert H. Etz were married yesterday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George MacKenney on Missionary Ridge. Dr. Loaring Clark officiated. Following the ceremony, the bridal couple left on a southern trip. v
