ANSWERS

1. Guide dogs. Dorado, Rivera’s dog, and Roselle, Hingson’s dog, guided their masters down 70 flights of stairs, through the commotion and the panic of thousands of fleeing people. Rivera actually had turned his dog loose and was resigned to death, but Dorado insisted on guiding him to safety. Hingson told Animal Planet, “There was a woman who was screaming that she couldn’t see, and I went over and I took her arm, and said, ‘Just relax. I’m blind but I got a guide dog here.’ And the dog seemed able to see just fine.”

2. Golden retriever. Dogs of many breeds worked at Ground Zero. Bear has his own page at http://bear.landofpuregold.com.

3. American Airlines Flight 11. Sept. 11, 2001, was a warm, sunny morning on the eastern seaboard then, American Airlines Flight 11 hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center, between the 100th and 104th floors. Sadly, 81 passengers and 11 crew members perished.

4. United Airlines Flight 175. The country was still in shock from the first plane hitting the World Trade Center, when United Airlines Flight 175 hit the South Tower, between the 80th and 86th floors. This one was more devastating because it was shown live by all the news stations covering the disaster of the North Tower. Sadly, 56 passengers and nine crew members aboard this flight perished.

5. American Airlines Flight 77. All 58 passengers and 6 crew members on board American Airlines Flight 77 died.

6. United Airlines Flight 93. United Airlines Flight 93 was scheduled to take off at 9 a.m., but the 45-minute delay probably saved more lives. At 10:10 a.m., United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Penn., a small town outside of Pittsburg. The passengers of this plane took control away from the terrorists, crashing the plane in a field. All 37 passengers and seven crew members of this heroic flight perished.
