Beginning Dec. 15, Chattanoogans will be able to board a 600-mile-an-hour jet at Lovell Field at 7 p.m. and arrive at New York at 9:14 p.m., Eastern Airlines announced Friday. This marks a new day in commercial service for Chattanooga and as the first such service for Chattanooga’s jet-age airport.
Richard L. James, manager of the Industrial Development Committee of the Greater Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, has resigned his position as of Oct. 1 to become executive manager of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber of Commerce in Valdosta, Ga.
Sunday, Sept. 19
H.B. Gilbert, manager of the S&W Cafeteria here, is being nominated by the Greater Chattanooga Restaurant Association for the honor of “Outstanding Restaurateur of the Year.” The statewide honor will be conferred at the 19th annual convention of the Tennessee Restaurant Association, to be held at the Read House Oct. 17-19.
Monday, Sept. 20
Between 30,000 and 35,000 persons saw “Tomahawks to TVA,” the spectacular pageant staged at Engel Stadium during its five-night run as a feature of Chattanooga’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, officials disclosed Sunday after reviewing activities.
Tuesday, Sept. 21
Howard Sompayrac, president of the Chattanooga Cherokees, and board member Paul Johnson, a fellow Jaycee, resigned Monday, and it appears doubtful the Cherokees will play their last regularly scheduled game in the Southern Football League against Jacksonville here Oct. 2. Remaining on the board, Vice President Charles O. Ragan Sr., former Cherokee president, and sporting goods dealers Buddy Martin and Fletcher Sims, so far have reached no official decision about the Jacksonville game.
Miss Brenda Harris, 17-year old senior at Soddy-Daisy High School, was crowned “Fairest of the Fair,” Monday night from among 25 contestants in the annual beauty pageant at the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Interstate Fair.
Wednesday, Sept. 22
Robert H. Weatherford has tendered his resignation as executive director of the Children’s Home, effective Sept. 30, after 12 years service. Mrs. Jere Tipton, chairman of the board, announced that Mr. Weatherford’s resignation was accepted with regret.
Thursday, Sept. 23
The board of trustees of Covenant College has announced the appointment of John W. Shoop of Elgin, Ill., as business manager. Mr. Shoop will join the Covenant staff Oct. 4.
Louis C. Harris, member of the legal firm of Moon, Harris and Dineen, was nominated for the president’s post of the downtown Kiwanis Club at Tuesday’s regular luncheon meeting of the club.
Friday, Sept. 24
The 13th Annual Tennessee Valley Medical Assembly will convene in Chattanooga Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 27 and 28, with headquarters at the Tivoli Theater. Several hundred physicians and surgeons, with their wives, are expected to attend. A golf tournament, sponsored by the Brayten Pharmaceutical Co., will be held at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club in Riverview. A social hour, compliments of Reid-Provident Laboratories, and dinner, sponsored by the Tennessee Medical Assembly at Hotel Patten, will climax the Sunday activities.
