Russell Fowler, director of litigation and advocacy at Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET), has received the 2016 B. Riney Green Access to Justice Award. The award is given annually by the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services (TALS), and recognizes attorneys whose efforts promote inter-program cooperation or otherwise strengthen the provision of civil legal aid in Tennessee.

Through his service on the Tennessee Bar Association’s Access to Justice Committee and his position with LAET, Fowler continues to equip legal aid and pro bono attorneys with the skills and knowledge they need to fight for low-income, elderly, and abused neighbors, TALS said in a press release.

Fowler has published works on law and legal history for a number of legal journals and organizations, including The Journal of Supreme Court History, The Tennessee Encyclopedia of History and Culture, the West Tennessee Historical Society Papers, the Smithsonian Institution, the American Bar Association, and The Tennessee Bar Journal.

“We’re proud of Russell, and excited that he’s been recognized by his peers for his efforts to promote access to justice in Tennessee,” said Sheri Fox, LAET executive director. “During his 19 years with LAET, Russell has worked tirelessly and zealously to protect the rights of those who simply cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Russell is a champion for the most vulnerable residents of our community. He also has worked to equip new generations of lawyers, as well as the more seasoned practitioners, with timely, informative, and entertaining articles. His legacy to the profession as a whole and civil legal aid in particular is immense.”

Fowler was presented with the award at the Access to Justice Dinner, a special evening during the TALS 2016 Equal Justice University.
